General / Off-Topic Euro 2016 discussion thread

Relax Patrick, you have more to be proud of than the English, your team made great effort from start to finish, there is no shame in losing a close game to a good team.

Yes you are right. But it is unforgivable to lose the cup at home. An opportunity like this, does not happen again before long. But well, the players are also of vulnerable humans. Enough good prestation of the team, however, during the competition. But laborious matches in general, anyway. I read this morning that the sports commentators say that the show of Euro 2016 was of average quality with all the teams. It is true that there has not been many great matches. Congratulations to Portugal which passed all the obstacles

I think it was just one of those nights when the key things went Portugal's way.

France had a few good shots on target where they broke down the defence but Rui whatsiface pulled off amazing saves - that isn't a failure of France it's exceptionally well done by the keeper.

If just one of those had gone in Portugal would have been forced to open up more and the game may have changed.

Even captain pouty going off seemed to help rather than hinder Portugal - maybe the French sub consciously thought it was a given then - who knows?

Anyway Portugal stuck to their game plan and it paid off in the end coming down to a long range effort through a hole in the defence that the keeper couldn't get to.

Yes a good analysis here

Portugal seemed to get much better after My Little Pony left the pitch. Still, over the entire competition, they could well be the least worthy winners in the history of the competition.

Without doubt one Portuguese mum and dad should be proud of their son.

This never happens to Mick Jagger. A Rolling Stone gathers no moths.

Mais non monsieur!

I say let traditional Anglo French hostilities resume temporarily until the outcome is known!

Until then ...

It is reassuring that some things in this world will never change. And that the traditions are respected. World, sweet world !

Euro 2016

The gods of football decided on another upset, 12 years after we Greeks stunned the Portuguese on their home turf and went on to win the tournament.

Even though I was rooting for the french, I can't help but feel somewhat happy for Ronaldo and his crew. Fernando Santos was our 4 year coach after all, and one could very well consider him a "greek" too ;)

I'd say it was an OKish tournament spectacle wise, with some good moments here and there. I am of the opinion however, that the format needs to be revised. While I agree with having 24 teams in the group stage, I think 3rd placed teams shouldn't go through to the next round. The prospect of a side qualifying merely after goalless draws or by simply delivering one decent performance after two horrid games, hurts the sport in the long run IMO. Plus, it makes for some awkward bracket positioning in the Knockout phase. I would much prefer it if it was like the old system where each top finisher met with a runner-up. Then, the 6 remaining teams could be dynamically seeded and drawn together in two mini groups where the same method would be used to formulate the semi finalists.

France has proved this evening that it is not a great team.

They were good enough, and you probably would have won the thing if the progress of the tournament followed a more sensible structure. I also think Didier Deschamps should stay and continue his work with the french team.

Yes finally with hindsight, this team is young and has a future. For the World Cup in 2018, there is the possibility of a good result, if we are qualified
