Eurogamer spoke with a few developers about the hardware requried for VR. Michael Brookes gets a few paragraphs on why Elite requires more than th Oculus recommended minimum. Worth a read:

It also seems the VR hardware recommendation for Elite is not a hard minimum requirement.
Personally, I'll be upgrading my ancient PC sometime in the coming year and looking to go above ED's minimum VR specs. If current hardware requirements are just for barren planets with little on them, we can only expect those requirements to increase when planets also get plants and wildlife. I'd like my next PC to last longer than to the start of season 3.
