General / Off-Topic Eurovision Song Contest 2017

Well fuzzy is about to get well and I'm asking myself why I didn't drink the vodka 3hrs ago. Obviously the organisers decided they want a few weeks in the sun next year. We should have made fekkin one direction enter this contest watching them get crap points would have made my day :D I need to strike a better deal with my better half next year, I'm thinking cat o'nine tails or six hrs on the rack, sod it I might even go underwear shopping with her.

Ok well if you gentleman would excuse I'm about to go outside and shoot myself.

Didnt watch it. Just checked the Portugal song on YT. Its actually a real song. Throw a filter on it and it would easily fit in the Fallout 4 soundtrack. Pleasantly surprised to find this in what is normally a freakshow parade of musical kitsch. I wish there was a weekly European Songfestival with songs like this and many other styles, without gimmicks, without cheap garbage, no jury, no televoting, no points, no winners, just music from different countries.

Ah well.

Was it the so called professional judges who awarded it to the wrong act, again?

They should not be hiring deaf people to judge a music contest.

I did not look, but I saw the ranking of France this morning. 12th ... As I said yesterday in another thread, the Eurovision is really quite uninteresting

:D

A commentator said that some countries always give the same number of points each year to other countries, whatever the song. Especially for the 12 points, there is collusion between certain countries

People are just salty, pay no attention. Just enjoy the music and stay happy.

I thought that there were some quite good acts in Eurovision this year. I did like the winner's comments that music isn't fireworks and effects.

I think France were glad they didn't do well as their entry should have been disqualified (for being previously performed), Germany's Levina didn't do herself justice as it sounded like she had hurt her voice (she had a good voice on the German selection shows where she won), Norway might have caused trouble for future Eurovis since they were allowed to use pre-recorded vocals in their electronic-sampling (Norway caused rule changes before when Secret Garden's almost completely instrumental track won).

I'm obviously no judge of what is a decent Eurovision song as neither Finland nor Czech Republic got past the semis and I rated them.

My main gripe about this year though is the poor "interval" performances - all Ukraine-related and so not even remotely as good as last years Justin Timberlake "party".

P.S. I don't know what the UK "commentators" were like, they are always so ill-informed, self-important and totally banal or insulting, so thankfully Eurovision is streamed live on youtube (which no doubt pleases my neighbours as I am not screaming obscenities at the commentators to shut up).

wouldn't this better be moved to the odd thread?

i used to watch this as a kid. there wasn't much else on tv. my granny and aunt liked it, it was their sort of thing and was kind of an amusing event of the year for them. i opted out before i was 10.

thx for the memories: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfX-KSbfIz0

i thought you were all hardened and somewhat educated space explorers! i'll have to adjust ... bunch of weirdos! :p

i...............

Isn't this an "odd thread" of its own? ;)

Seriously though, Eurovision has come a long way since the crazy days. There are still some weird entries but they usually get weeded out in the semis - some (like the horse-head man on a ladder) slip through the net. The UK sees it as a joke but on the continent it is seen differently - the selection contests in Scandinavia for example are big-TV for example.

It is still a good way to see and hear different styles of music and can be like a great party. Last year's "Stadium Party" interval act from Justin Timberlake gives a taste:

Plus of course there is a lot of fun:

The horse head man on the ladder was actually the best entry for me.

I saw a break dancing gorilla on Saturday night, as well as a large Croatian man in what appeared to be a half-biker, half-suit singing opera music then switching to pop.

I think it was two years ago a man was playing a piano that randomly went on fire.

That's what the UK has to do to win this thing. Bring the crazy. Get a bunch of contortionists unpacking themselves from tiny boxes while singing something like "When there is tears in the eyes of a Nepali pack mule".

I say next year we go all out for the sympathy vote and get Stephen Hawking to "sing" our entry. We'd be certain to win then :D
I mean, how could you not vote for this to win?

I'd vote for that.

BTW Alien you really should watch ESC on youtube (it's streamed live), and you get to watch without that idiotic Graham Norton doing his pointless voice overs.

That is exactly what I did this year. I only put the BBC on the second PC once the voting started to get the phone number (and not Norton's commentary) and then found that I couldn't vote as each time I tried I got a cut off tone. Conspiracy I tell you.

What a waste of money, UK should abolish that one...

Since the finals provide the Beeb with over 9 hours of television coverage and a lot more radio coverage, the selection contest used to give them a series of entertainment shows for TV (now just one) I doubt it would be classed as a "waste of money".

Much more is spent on things like The Proms and Glasto - maybe you think they should be axed too and lets have more baking, 'enders and pseudo-"reality" rubbish. I still have songs on my playlists from past years of ESC (but not many winners!) and stacks of stuff from artists I would not have heard from were it not for the ESC.

P.S. Just over a month now until my broadband goes nuts with loads of live stages from Glasto again - https://www.bbc.co.uk/events/ec584f

:)
