So with all the talk of EVA hopefully making an appearance soon, I was wondering what kind of approach Fdev would take. Here is my suggestion:
Since we'll obviously have all kinds of gear for our character, why not add similar mechanics to what we see with the ships. You would build a heavy combat, mining, infiltration etc. loadout for your suit including heavy/tough builds and lighter more nimble builds etc. that you can switch between in your ships armory before going EVA.
However instead of engineering this gear, which could include everything from weapons, armour, upgrades like thermal vision visors, upgraded servos for better movement speed or carry capacity etc, you would find better versions in the wild. Crashed ships, derelict ships in USS' or even by raiding or infiltrating military facilities and boarding certain ships where you can find this gear.
Perhaps have a level based system similar to many MMOs where you can find higher level gear. This would encourage exploration since you can always find some sweet loot.
This would also allow for a player market where you can put the items you've found on the market where others can trade with you for the gear you want. Kinda like eBay for the players. The trade system could have a level cap where the 2 traded items have to be within a certain level of each other to be tradable. This could help prevent a grey market among players. Got a high level assault rifle, but need a sniper rifle instead? Put it on the market at set your criteria, someone out there will have what your looking for.
Of course none of this would be possible right now, but in the future, who knows? Lots of exiting things are happening over at Fdev so who knows what possibilities the future holds?
TL;DR:
Have loot that can be found out in the black like weapons armour etc. That can also be traded among players on a galactic player market
