General / Off-Topic Evans quits Top Gear

Evans quits TG

I could be opening a can of worms here since I'm all-too-well aware that the previous team divided opinion sharply. No doubt some of that will come through here, but I'm more keen to discuss the new show format than the old.

So...

I always thought Evans was out of his comfort zone in this show, and I've felt at times that there was tension evident between him and other presenters, most notably LeBlanc (who I thought settled very comfortably into the role). I've had the feeling that something like this was coming for a couple of weeks now.

The other fellow owned too much of the show.

'Star in a reasonably priced car'; for example.

It was a very hard act to follow and I feel that they need to give it a season or two, to re-settle into a new format. There was a successfully Top Gear show, long before the last three run things. Mind you; in those days, TV was a bit limited for choice. It is almost like, they have too many presenters now. I have only watched one episode all the way through, so not really fair for me to make judgements. As to Chris leaving: He is not going to stick around, when things are failing, as he has better offers to take up his time. Maybe he should take up, a lesser role; as he is a solid 'petrol head' and has some good things to say on the subject.

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. That team is difficult to replace.

Clarkson was dropped from the show after he punched a producer following a row about the provision of food late at night while filming on location.

LMAO yeah a loose cannon he is :D but that is also what make him great, its the madness.

Once Jeremy was dropped and the others left, they should have just closed up shop and let it be.....it has been a dumpster fire with Evans. You know you are messing up when the US Top Gear starts looking really good.

It was bound to be difficult to make the Jeremy Clarkson show without Jeremy Clarkson.

That's the nub really.

Evans is a talented presenter but he isn't and can never be, Clarkson.

I have to confess, that other than a few excerpts, I didn't watch Evans' Top Gear. Much like Bleeding Gums Murphey, I have enough pain without that!

Ye can take Clarkson outta top gear but then it's just not top gear anymore...watched the pilot episode and ain't watched it since and won't again until they put the real top gear team back. Even though they don't really like the car I drive (alfa romeo)

The problem the BBC have is that Top Gear was (during the Clarkson era) a massive cash cow. They could not just drop it. OK, Chris Evans always had a huge pair of shoes to fill, and it could have been (and was) a poisoned chalice. He has done the sensible thing in quitting. This could well put a buffer between Clarkson Top Gear and the next phase of the program, allowing the BBC to develop it further. If Matt Le Blanc is allowed to be the presenter he could be, Top Gear could well be successful again.

Wow. Can't say I'm surprised really. They should have definitely axed the show once Clarkson and co left. I guess they will now?

I doubt it very much.

1. The Clarkson version was pretty much a law unto itself, and was always going to be pretty much impossible to recreate - the Beeb's biggest mistake IMHO was to try to do exactly that (hence the choice of Evans to take it on - not to mention the Reliant Rialto piece in the first show). The show has morphed somewhat as the series has gone on. It is now more of a program about knowledgeable and skillful drivers hooning around in some fabulous cars and less of a show about some skillful and highly entertaining presenters behaving like children in whatever cars happened to be available as props.

2. It's easy to forget that the Clarkson version took several series' to establish itself; I don't think they'll be looking to throw it away just yet. Instead of trying to repeat the unrepeatable I would think they'll continue working to turn it into an actual car show, albeit with a sense of fun and - who knows - adolescent behaviour occasionally. I think they have a good team with which to achieve that objective (minus Eddie Jordan of course :)). The Stig might need to be sacrificed - but it's not as if they don't have good drivers to replace him. Personally I'd prefer to keep him, but will understand it if they don't - in his own way he was as much a part of the old regime as the other three.

When I heard about the punch I thought there should have been a short suspension and fine perhaps. Firing him was a big mistake I thought.

The last series was Top Gear only by name.

Without evans the others could shine perhaps so it could be a good show still.

They have found a replacement for Evans already.

Didn't take long.
