Eve Online rant

Elite's main selling points are the galaxy and the flight model. If that doesn't mean much to you, then you can definitely have fun with X4 or NMS. But to say it's the better Elite is a bit of a stretch.
The flight model I can experience in DCS in a better way. X4 has a better approach to the FM and speed limits. Leaves the galaxy, which is kinda pointless to me. I think the more densely populated galaxy of NMS is better than the barren wasteland of ED's majority of places. ED is kinda the game that got done because they could - with only little afterthought about the purpose of such a huge open world.

My point is you get more of a sense of flying your ship in NMS compared to Eve ships. Thrust / pitch control, turning / boosting; cockpit view of the flight controls. Eve is just point and click. Its not about piloting ships in Eve.
So are you still playing Eve, or have you abandoned it? I'm tempted to try it (it's free after all), just as a "back burner" game that I can dip my toe in on occasion. The idea of a real player-based economy fascinates me. If I do try Eve, it would be with the idea of actually embracing the spreadsheet side of the game (along with exploration). Heck, I might even learn something about economics!

The reason I ask is because it sounds like having trustworthy friends is a good idea in this game, and if we Elite CMDRs stick together, maybe we can survive the sharks and wolves.

I still login and collect the daily rewards and check on the skill training queue. There's a lot to do with Career agents and the Sisters of Eve arc. That will give you a good feel for the PvE side of Eve. Alpha clones are free to start and I guess you can go pretty far on alpha at least long enough to see if you like it. Omega clones are a $15 monthly sub and there are some perks such as 2X speed on skill training and other skills/ships that are Omega only. Want to reach the optimal level of output and efficiency in any given field, you have to be Omega.

As far as the economy, its totally player driven supply and demand. There's a lot of whining in game now about the cheap price of ore. Want to sell something? There has to be an existing player contract for the thing you want to sell immediately. There are a relatively few trade hubs where you can buy/sell everything and those are ganker paradises. There is no solo mode.

I suspect you'll like Eve at least as much as I did and maybe you'll find a good corp that takes you under the wing. I'm still looking.

I wouldn't pay a subscription, no interest in getting that involved in the game. If I'm going to pay a monthly fee for something, it will be for a dedicated Space Engineers server. I just want to poke my head into the Eve Online world and say, "Howdy from Old Duck!"

But that might have to take a back seat since @drew Wager tricked me into buying NMS for my PC ;)

Reading the recent reviews, I don't think I'm even going to bother. That's okay, I already have way too many space games!

Flying a ship from cockpit view is what I'm doing 95% of the time I'm playing X4. Granted, I'm not trying to build an empire (though I do have a proper fleet now), and for those who prefer to play the game top-down like Stellaris, it definitely allows for that, albeit a bit clunky.

I think going to X4 fresh, not having previous X Universe experience, may actually have worked in my favor. I was never able to get into X3, but X4 sucked me right in. In some ways it is a better Elite than Elite is!
I added X4 to my Steam wish list, just waiting for the next sale.

I doubt I'll ever try EVE again. In its early years (~2004 or 5) I tried it for several hours and came to realize it is FTP, but to advance with any efficiency it required real money. It is more or less, free to get started. That whole concept was new to me so I uninstalled it.

At the time I was still heavily into hex map strategy games and armored simulators (like HPS/John Tiller games, SSG, ToaW series, and Steelbeasts). I was disappointed you could not fly EVE ships from the pilot seat so that was a negative for me too. Around the same time, I also discovered games like Freelancer, Independence War and a few others that scratched my itch for space games. A few years later, Evochron came out and that was it; no need for any other space game at the time.
