Eve online's captain quarters will be removed.

Did you know of one of the most successful character creators of the galaxy?

It all happened in a space game, EVE online, where the player had no identity but his ship.
No first person, no looking at your legs and your hands on the HOTAS. You were just a massive ship filmed from kilometers away.

A vision came, to incarnate a character in that dehumanized universe. It was all served by bad marketing, bad bad bad moves.
The easy road was taken at first : a character creator, and your captain's quarters, with a couch he could relax on, bad animation and nothing more.

It will soon be shut off. Turns out 3% of the playerbase actually used that tiny bit of spacefaring life, never developped to its full potential, always dismissed by some. I was one of those 3%. Hurts my guts.
Cosmetics bought for nothing (not by me though, not that rich). Significant dev time erased for the sake of future dev time.

I'm almost compelled to make a comparison between what it could be for elite, the easy and plausible road for legs - a social hub inside stations and visiting your own ship. But I won't because I hope the devs and the playerbase are different enough to not reproduce the disaster.

I always really cared about how my EVE avatar looks like, I put tons of in game money in to various costumes, tattoos all kid of stuff... Always using captains room, wanted more walking around and now this??? I understand that feature is not used my most players but why on Earth remove it completely? First they butchered fancy UI icons making them in to some pre-alpha generic trash, then they messed up few module icons in to more pre-alpha like trash... oh and lately they removed iconic sexy voice from Aura AI replacing it with generic female voice #4... I wont even mention game play stuff.
Anyway looks like I was lucky and jumped in to EVE 4/5 years ago to at least play the game in its full glory.

I must say I don't know about the removal.

Surely, if they do, shattering parts of work and money from the players - it must be that the module's code is a pain to keep up to date with the rest of the game. It looks disconnected for sure, but maybe it drags down the rest. And the rest is at stakes - for the first time, I've seen commercials on Facebook. Really, Eve commercials in Facebook? With 2 angry comments. And the free to play model... it does not promise a bright future.

It sure hurts, because it's partly what attracted me to the game : the acknowledgement that there's a human face in that ship. And even if the captain's quarters weren't much, I usually ended my sessions by just going there, dealing with my inventory and my planetary ressources from the more "physical" UI. A tv screen, a monitor...
It was just a nice pause from the wobbling ships and cold stations.

In terms of strategy, I guess it's a loss. It should have been developped rather than let on the side for years to be crashed, a single social hub would have been good. Lots of people want that from a game, you can see the success of more "lively" and social crowdfunded space games... People sometimes connect in EVE just to talk with their corp or anything. Simple gameplay opportunities could have been implemented there.

But you don't add a face to a playerbase that's there for the ship part. I guess a good vocal portion of them did not care about that. Still thinking of Elite, at least (to me), the game has been sold with this evolution in mind from the get-go...

ED will get legs, we will walk around, you will see your ship from within, It's a fact.
Now here is the tricky part, WHEN? we just don't know, hopefully as soon as possible so that the community can keep expanding and fill the huge 1:1 galaxy.

I played Eve for almost 13 years before I pulled the plug, still have billions of isk in my accounts. I always thought that was a dumb addition to Eve. Where exactly were they going with that concept? Walking in stations and then what? It does not surprise me to see it go. All though it was a great game for so long , I don't think it will be around for another 10 years. I have not checked the facts but I do see they are offering a " play for free if you come back " email. Which tells me they are slowly losing their player base. They are missing what Elite has , graphics wise, and unfortunately Elite is missing something that Eve has, economy and willful crafting. I wish CCP the best but I'm sticking with Elite when it comes to my free time. I see a lot of options for Frontier and hope they learn from the mistakes and bad practices of CCP. Just my two cents

I guess they were going with some sort of a social hub, initially. The single addition could have attracted more RPers into some sort of a 50% spreadsheet "cold" game. The existingplayerbase did cut the grass under their feet though, as they did not accept this kind of change and especially the marketing tied to it. They did not need it. A player-attracting opportunity is a loss if it causes more people leaving than joining - and one must admit that Eve's community is really harsh. Harshness is built into the game, both inside and around it.

I share your views around the game though. I never reached a top level in EVE but I liked it for a time, and I would not come back to it now. Things are moving and you can see some desperate motions to keep people actually playing, more than planning the game.
But you're spoiled by it, when it comes to the economy and the sense of a cohesive experience.
You can never go mine in elite with that feeling of participating and being the backbone of anything. You can never haul and feel like a freelancer in a real economy.

i remember that 'feature' and ... really, 3% looks like a lot! well, feeling for you, stay strong, bro. :D

eve and ed are often compared in one very specific point of the galaxy (namely this forum) but they aren't comparable at all. i've been receiving these 'invite' emails for years and they're normal. i've even got one from frontier too! both games have very strong aspects and both companies have a successful model, however ccp has a track record that frontier might have some day but right now only could wish for. i wouldn't be surprised if eve were still around in 10 years.

and it was about time they got rid of that thang! :D

There are lots of things Elite could "borrow" from EVE as far as player created content goes. No matter what ED still feels like SP game with the occasional PVP encounters, in my opinion we need some sort of crafting, player to player trading, better coop, you know the thing - has been discussed and argued to death here.
Also, obligatory question Cmdr Ssyx - if you decide to drop EVE completely, can I liberate you from all those ISKs you posses? [cool]

Depends on if I can get back on easily enough. I will try to install and log on on monday. What scares me is being logged in and re-liking it. It's been a few years. There are a ton of BPOs if I remember correctly as well. Almost of all ships and a lot of capital ship bpo (parts). But I do agree on player trading and player crafted material. Some day... looking for my last kill mail on any kill board and can't find any record

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
That's unfortunate, but not surprising. The whole 'ambulation' thing in EVE never went anywhere. I did really enjoy the character creator in EVE and spent lots of time customizing and tweaking my character. It's one of the best character creators ever as far as facial customization goes.

The EVE/ED comparisons are asinine unless comparing legitimately shared gameplay...alas, most "comparisons" seem to be based on the simple fact they're set in space.

ED is not the tactical resource game that EVE is...it's like trying to develop attachment to character in a RTS game, which EVE may as well be.

ED is you taking on the galaxy. You may not win or be important, but it's you, and you are going to be a bigger part of this when "space legs" etc. hits. You can't chuck away characters when moving towards that.

Now what happens with the stuff people purchased for the feature? Bad luck or some kind of recompensation?

From the CCP update:

While captain’s quarters will be removed from New Eden with the August release, the ability to view your avatar in 3D will remain in place through the show info window on characters.

You’ll also still be able to customize the look of your avatar through the station services panel the same as you can do right now.

All the apparel that you currently own will still be available to you and will remain usable as it currently is now so that you can show it off to other pilots.
