EVE Valkyrie Alpha observations

I've joined the Eve Valkyrie alpha test using the DK2. Keep in mind it is ALPHA at this stage, so it's a massively stripped down version of the final game.

The menus and staging are designed uniquely for VR, relying on headlook to select menu items in a 3D space. It emphasizes turning your head and moving/leaning, but plays just fine seated. I'm impressed with the way they've implemented the UI/UX in VR. They can do this because it is exclusively a VR title AFAIK. I felt it was a little more difficult to get info from the cockpit position (e.g. power, weapons stats, etc) vs ED, but functional nonetheless. One aspect I really enjoy is being able to target missiles simply by looking at a ship, so it's easy to fly in one direction and target a ship as you fly away perpendicularly.

The graphics at "EPIC" setting are nice. Not Elite Dangerous in 2D gorgeous, but very cool. Text and objects - even starfields - are objectively much easier to read/discern than Elite Dangerous Horizons using SteamVR. It gives hope that with the right attention, EDH will have much more legible text with less shimmering/distortion. There are no config settings for graphics other than low, med, high, epic, so I do not know if they're implementing AA, supersampling, etc. Framerate is solid and I've not experienced any lag, judder or tearing. Colors are a bit washed out and will surely look much better on the CV1 hardware. So, overall, highly satisfying graphics performance and I expect it will just get better.

Gameplay is arcade-ish. The flight model is very different from ED and I experienced some motion sickness until I switched to an Xbox controller from my Logitech 3D stick. With the Xbox controller, it was easier to control, but I'm an old school 'X-Wing with a Thrustmaster' gamer and avoid using a controller for anything put platform games, so others may make the switch more easily. There's no real throttle control. You can brake and boost, but as far as I can tell, you're always moving. So no camping behind wreckage to surprise an enemy like in CQC. Multiplayer game matches is at the heart of this title and I saw no lag or drop in performance with a fully occupied map (16 players I think). If you haven't seen it yet, the launch sequence is exhilarating, especially emerging from the launch tube into a chaotic battle. Reminds me of Battlestar Galactica. (https://youtu.be/DZ4gpjwJa08)

Final initial thoughts: Eve Valkyrie has been years in development with VR first in mind. They've got a solid performing game with exciting arcade gameplay. The UI is different enough to wow a VR vet. For VR virgins, this should blow their mind. I can see why Oculus would want this game in everyone's hands - it is unique to VR and a re-playable showcase for what can be done. Once they incorporate squad chat and add more maps/ships, I can see this as a fun game to jump into for a quick match or a few hours of leaderboard boosting battle. For me, this could be the 'Team Fortress 2' title for VR.

Is it still open for sign up? I signed up after preordering my CV1 and was led to think i'd get alpha access but never got a reply..I'd love to try this in my DK2.

I gave it a try last night. I agree with the OP. I'm also not a fan of flying with a controller, and would prefer to use my HOTAS, but in this alpha build, I couldn't configure it. It is extremely fast paced and arcady. I would hope Oculus would also include a slower paced in cockpit game for us non-twitch shooters (old). ED would probably be too similar being another space game. I'd like to see a deal with War Thunder, as it lends itself well to VR, feels like you're flying but isn't overly complicated like a true flight sim.

Very disappointed that its a VR only title. I'll get VR at some point but not in the next few years until the tech catches up with requirements and it matures somewhat by ironing out some of the drawbacks. Anyways its a shame its not also being released in standard 2d mode it looks amazing and I love the eve world.

IMHO - In a nutshell, it's absolutely no competition for ED as a whole, but it is much better, and more fun than CQC.

What HOTAS do you have? I can fly perfectly fine with X52Pro. I uploaded a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bs2ZZ-vAuaw

I think EVE Valkyrie is a fun arcarde game but it is not deep and strategic as CQC in Elite or the general Elite game. No competition for ED as a whole.

God that's really saying something.

It's a shame but it seems it's basically a tech demo and poster boi for Oculus. Maybe they'll flesh it out and incorporate it more into the main game.

I disagree. Technically it's great, absolutely flawless VR, larger maps with more objects compared to CQC.
But gameplay wise I found it much more simplistic and arcadey than CQC. No lateral thrusters, very limited speed control (just boost and brake, not possible to stop), speed not impacting turn rate significantly, no power management, no FA off.
Hitting anything with the fixed guns is quite hard so fights are mostly about spamming those fire-and-forget missiles.

Well, it's still in Alpha and I have only spend a limited amount of time in it. But if there aren't going to be substantial changes to the gameplay I doubt it'll keep up my interest for a longer time.

The (rather essential) advantage it has over CQC is that you can actually play. I haven't been able to get into any game in CQC for months (gave up trying) due to bad matchmaking or just a lack of other players. The bad news is that in 95% of all Eve Valkyrie matches there were only bots - no other players.

I definitely prefer CQC. This is fun but doesn't hold my attention long... I hope it does well and helps keep the space games coming, though!

It won't have anywhere near the longevity and community of TF2, I can't see that happening...

I was putting this off but now its on Oculus for 50% off 1 year anniversary and I have to say if CQC had some of the game elements like the capital ships which you have to defend/attack it would be awsome.

I love space combat and this game is impressive; I can see it becoming repetitive but that also goes for CQC.
