Even in space, it's not safe to text and drive. A true story.

So, I found out what happens when you crash into a star tonight.

I have a dual monitor setup and was looking at facebook during a hyperjump.
I popped out of hyperspace and grabbed my controller to turn my ship away from the star. But wait, what? The controls weren't responding. I kept getting closer and closer, heat levels rising trying to figure out why my controls weren't working. I ended up getting too close and my ship did an emergency drop next to the star, and I started overheating. That was when I realized my computer was still focused on my browser and not on my ship. My ship had almost melted and my canopy broke, kicking in my emergency life support. I had 5 minutes to find a place to dock and repair. So I punched in the coordinates of the nearest starport and kicked into supercruise to try to get there before I ran out of air. 23 Ls away, I can make it.

I made it to the starport but my life support clock was still ticking, and much to my surprise I chose the one starport that didn't have repair services. . Luckily I was able to enter the hangar bay which replenished my oxygen, but the clock was ticking again. I needed to find a place to repair quick!

I checked my system map and found a starport with repair services only 23 light seconds away. If I was quick I could make it there in time. So off I launched on another emergency cruise with the clock ticking.

I was getting close to the starport, with a little over 2 minutes worth of oxygen left. It was going to be close. It would have to be a rushed landing but I could pull it off. But then the worst happened.

A pirate must have noticed my damaged ship and realized I would be easy pickings. He hit me with an interdiction, and since my canopy was broken I had no HUD and I wasn't able to pull out of it to escape. The had just pulled me out of supercruise, and it was going to take another minute to recharge my frameship drive to escape.

I managed to avoid his fire long enough to jump back into hyperspace, but I had lost a full minute due to his ery, and it had thrown me a bit off course. He had effectively killed me with his little prank. With less than 30 seconds to go I was coming within visual distance of the starport.

Still, I almost made it. I got close enough to the station to call out a docking request, but I was down to 13 seconds of life support. So there I was, in a galaxy of 400 billion stars less than a mile from safety suffocating to death.
Space is so cold.

RIP Commander Zedares.

Moral of the story, don't text and drive. Even in space.

Very exciting death though, CMDR. Good for a tale around the spacebar.

Protip for the future - zero your throttle during the jump countdown. I hit a couple lagstorms early in my career while dropping out of warp and nearly plowed some stars as the lagstorm messed with my control timing. Found out you could zero out before the jump and prevent the whole disaster.

Good story. +1 rep.

Also, never carry anything less than a D-rated life support system. This will give you 7.5 minutes of air if the canopy blows out. A-rated life support gives you 25 minutes which is enough for most locations unless you're way out in exploration-territory.
