I've been fighting a bit inside of the Orna conflict zones in the starter systems after clearing my save file. This was of course just to give myself a fresh start in the game after not having played it in over a year.
I understand that new players are anticipated to be fighting against ships much larger than them in Orna, but to put them against engineered npc ships with modules that cannot be bought outside of the federation district is a total disservice. I myself had no idea that the engineering pathway even exists or how to attain it back when I was first new to the game.
Can we disable engineering for npcs in just this one system, or at least scale the amount of engineering according to the player vs npc's combat ranking? It seems to be too hard for newcomers to take out any ships without needing to be babysat by 3 other friendly ships. Since the simulation influence doesn't actually change progress from 50-25-25 here, no particular side would be disadvantaged and players get valuable combat experience without dying to almost every ship they shoot at.

For the most part it's easy enough to just fly outside of the aimcone of whatever enemy you're taking on, let your shield recharge and take potshots for chip damage for extended lengths of time, assuming pip management. Other times, you can get targetted and melted within seconds. And don't even bother to try escaping once you realize that the big boys are on you; you'll die before you can reboot/repair
Note you can only buy a limit set of modules in the PFD, maxed at D rated modules.
I should also mention that you get warned for destroying CMDRs inside of a conflict zone. Is this intentional? I would have imagined knowingly going into a faction fight with a combat equipped ship in open would pit you against other players in PvP.
edit2: trying out railguns+medium cannon, dropping chaff
verdict: it's a bit better suited for waving in place and firing rather than actively trying to get on top of the enemy or waiting for them to come into you with the frags. but it is definitely powerplant hungry.
edit3: switched to a viper with medium fixed pulses and cannons. doing a lot better now, just from the additional hardpoint dps. cannons can be swapped for missiles too but they're single-target use only. it's heavier to fly with, sure, but it feels like a tank and the extra shield capacity is helpful
woo i actually got combat bonds in, over a milly credits now
