Every time I close ED, I lose all my bindings. What gives?

Every single binding, right down to pitch roll and yaw disappears when I close ED, and when I start it again I have to spend 30 minutes setting up and testing everything again.

As you can imagine, this is massively annoying. What gives?

Wow that sounds painful! It might be worth checking the file permissions, and that your changed bindings are being written into the file?

If the file is being written to, once set up, copy it to a new name, and select that file in options when you restart. Don't forget to backup that file too.

If all else fails, file a bug report.

Also make sure you only have one binds file in the folder. Move the default one away from there.
And yes, as the cowbell guy above me said - if you have Elite installed on a system drive, outside the default location in AppData, it may have problems with permissions to overwrite the binds file. Try running it as administrator or move it to other drive.

I lose all my bindings if I don't start ED with all my controllers already plugged in to the same USB slots. I had to take a pic to remember the exact USB arrangement to avoid this.

Why ED is so with bindings baffles me.

You don't lose your bindings (usually) - it's just that when ED doesn't detect the same control devices as when you set up the bindings, it defaults to kb&m. Check the error log and startup default file in your bindings folder if you want to see the details.

For me, it's usually the throttle that sometimes disconnects when I start my PC. Fortunately, I notice this at once (since the menu controls are on one the throttle ministicks), and so I can't even scroll down to select to start the game. Re-plugging the throttle usually fixes that (i.e. if you haven't started the actual game yet, ED will still be able to recognize and correct the bindings settings).

try to switch the bindings profile one time to the default settings. save it.
restart elite.
switch to your custom profile. change your bindings. save it.
worked for me.

I think you two may be onto something. I "recently" (recently enough that I'm not feeling the financial pain anymore, but I still forget I have them) bought a set of MFG Crosswind pedals, and I frequently start ED having forgotten to plug them in.
I'll keep an eye on things :).

Check what is written in the file "BindingLoadingErrors.log" which is in the Options\Bindings folder.

P.S. If you are still using a binds file named "custom" you might want to read up on how to change that as it is the custom file that has issues - files with other names AND descriptions in line 2 of the file (very important) - just don't get loaded if a controller is missing, they don't get overwritten.

Mine default when I forget to re-enable the CH software after a reboot. I need the software for the custom setup putting my vert thrusters onto the pedals for full analog control (lats are on the throttle thumbstick).

Another thing to try is - in case you have Elite through Steam - is to start the launcher directly, without starting it in Steam. I used to have trouble with bindings when launching through Steam, and once I changed that to starting the launcher executable directly, that went away (short of other HOTAS problems, especially since a recent Win10 security patch, which requires me to un- and re-install Thrustmaster drivers daily, but that's a whole other story)
