Every time I log off, it's due to not having fun!

Can't quite put my finger on it, but I'm gonna blame it on lack of progression for the meantime. I had fun in the sidewinder and hauler, and even the cobra, though I don't really like the cobra. I've tried the eagle, adder, and viper for combat, but I'm not really interested in combat in this game.

Last I really enjoyed this game was in the hauler, flying with max cargo and no shields doing missions. Unfortunately that gameplay doesn't scale up to any other ship. I had an Asp, but it's simply too expensive to fly even if you have insurance and all the best modules and weapons because there is no income stream level with doing missions in a hauler. You might make more credits per hour, but it sure as hell doesn't feel like it.

I've been too optimistic with the game thus far. I've devoted my gaming time to it, but it isn't paying off. I'm sorry guys, I really am, but I just can't continue to justify all the shortcomings ED has right now. All the people I've been praising the game to, I've had to intervene and recommend they NOT buy this game, and it has me feeling embarrassed. Still feels like early access.

I played Everquest when it launched and it at least fulfilled the promises the dev's envisioned at launch. Same with Anarchy online, Asheron's call, Dark age of Camelot, and World of Warcraft. You can say that no MMO had it right from the start, but you're fooling yourself - all these had groups, scaling missions, excellent loot, and well-defined progression. Every one of them was a fun, complete game at ship. Elite Dangerous has none of this, unfortunately. Is it fair to compare these games? Not really, but ED did bill itself as an MMO at launch, when we all now know that it never was. Until there are dedicated Frontier servers, it never will be a MMO.

I've had a support ticket in since 23 Jan that has been ignored (#00000030092). You may be tempted to give slack to Frontier, as I have, but think of this: back in 1998, while playing Everquest, I put in a GM ticket because my corpse was lost, and a GM (employed game master) ported himself to my position in a full suit of never-before-seen armour within the hour and helped me out. Imagine how cool it would be for a Frontier employee to jump to your position in a never-before-seen ship to take care of your problem ... while you're still playing. Have we really gone in the opposite direction in the past 15+ years of gaming? Yes, we have.

Guys n Gals, this game is awesome. It really is a reincarnation of the original. I never got the chance to play the original, but I've seen it in action, and this incarnation of the game is true and just. But, hey, this is 2015 ... where are the hoverboards - I mean the tangible passion of a true sandbox game? The freedom isn't here. Smuggling is a shadow of a joke, trading has been wrecked, pirating is entirely dependent on fools, bounty hunting is too low-paying beyond a viper, mining is TOTALLY ridiculous, exploring is ... actually, I've been tempted to try it, since nothing else seems stable enough to invest my attention to. Not really impressed with the black hole and neutron star effects that I've seen to be honest.

I know I'm going to get hate from the fans, but I also know I'm right. Hey, I AM a fan. I wouldn't be here if I weren't. This game has systemic flaws, not just something that can be fixed in a patch. There's like 6 months worth of work that needs doing here. Forget planetary landings and passenger ships - basic game progression isn't fully implemented! Remember, they're talking about GROUPING being added in a DLC! It's completely disappointing. Feel like I'm going to have to box it up for about a year or so until they actually make this game worth the hours you can sink into it.

ED has all the makings of a deep, engaging game, except it's neither deep nor very fun after a few hours right now. It's a beautiful framework for a game, but where is the gameplay? There are rookie mistakes in game philosophy here - like supercruise; On paper, and in theory, it's as it should be, but is it fun? No. Supercruise should work the exact opposite that it currently does. Wouldn't it be more fun to speed up because of gravity wells than to slow down? Wouldn't it be more fun to have the challenge of managing your speed if when you approached a planet, you were drawn in, rather than repelled? How could sling-shotting around planets and stars not be fun? A very engaging way to fight interdictions. In my opinion, these are the things we expect to happen in our minds while going superlumial because that's what makes sense ... in spite of being able to see anything at all while traveling faster than light. Frontier is bending the rules of physics for gameplay reasons, but not even close to far enough for fun reasons. I know it's too late to change, but supercruise could at least be improved by making acceleration & deceleration times faster by at least ten fold.

I didn't want to make a moan post, yet here it is, after months of sinking my time into ED. I just can't continue to pretend that nothing is wrong. I'll check in for the next couple of weeks, but for now, I'm moving on. I actually have more fun in SpaceEngine than in ED, believe it or not. See you's on the other side, fellow CMDR's!

>not really interested in combat

I can see why you're getting bored then, combat's the only thing that's consistently fun for me, and I turn to it whenever I'm getting tired of any other tasks in the game. Trading in particular really tries my patience, sighing in frustration when yet another system advertises goods it doesn't actually want to buy and charging up the FSD to go to some other planet I've seen 50 times on the same run. At least exploration mixes up the eye candy to dampen the repetition. Mining I'm not even going to try. Tried a little bit of piracy last night, and while I didn't manage to catch anything the thrill was unique.

Guys, I'm not particularly keen on violence in general these days. I'm not naive though, and I've given ED a fair shoot at combat, really. Were there no trading, would the combat in this game be up to 2015 gameplay standards?

Not had a single session that I haven't enjoyed (or told myself I should log off because I have something in RL that I need to do).

Sorry to be so blunt but you are wrong about the asp, t7 (and the clipper). You can make far more (even with shields) trading than they cost to run.

I'm having plenty of fun too.

There are issues, but I knew all about them from watching streamers and youtube vids prior to release.

At the risk of repeating myself, I got exactly what I paid for, and I have more than enough patience to watch the game develop as I continue to enjoy it

I too have enjoyed playing as the game developed, but the progress toward anything resembling innovative is just too slow. I like FD as a company, but not enough is happening.

Yep, my asp (which is a bounty hunting/trading setup) is definitley profitable. I had a go at a clipper than caused me a bit of a loss so some care is required, but if it was profitable WITHOUT care it'd be boring.

I don't know how you can get any enjoyment out of trading - I HAD to trade for two days to get the cash to fit out my ASP for exploring, as exploring in my hauler was not bringing in enough cash.

I'm not into combat - well not unless evil aliens want to examine me with a probe! - Then I'll get some enjoyment from pew pew...

But for me - Exploring is enjoyable and relaxing - I know it does not pay well but I'd rather less cash for enjoyment over pew pew or cargo captain.

I would like to do mining too, but telling the hopper to process every single mothertrucking ton just makes me angry.

Maybe give Exploring a go? - Recently someone discovered 3 Earth Like planets orbiting each other and now have their name permanently attached to them!

Each to their own though.

That's where I'm at now, Nutter. Exploring is the last length of rope this game has for me I fear. I really wanted to be smuggling and stealing things, but it's simply not worth it. I have a sidey ready to go where no sidey has gone before, but I never counted on it hahha.

Check out this guide and see if you can outfit a Hauler, not sure what bank roll you have but a Hauler is a great ship to start with, I went to Barnards loop on my first trip. Ok A lot of people have been there now but it will give you some practice and prepare you for a bigger trip! Some nice screen shots to be had too!

More content will come for exploring, right now though, you can become famous in every system you find first ;) - I've not seen any famous pew pew's or Captain Cargo's anywhere! ;)

Yeah, good point. Up until 1.1, the only scoreboard was the top 5 wanted list. As far as money goes, I can buy dozens of haulers. I can fit one out for exploration and have a couple of weeks worth of thrills from exploration (I hope), but the underlying issue will remain: This game is far from complete, and should not have released.

I've enjoyed my time with the game, but I have to say, once you're in a Cobra there isn't really anywhere else to go unless you're willing to trade. Bounty hunting and piracy are irrelevant with regards to income. Fun, yes, sustainable? Not really. I don't want to trade, I did tons of that in FE2 and while it was fun, I want to fight. The combat in this game is awesome, but the rewards for your efforts are pathetic. I've upgraded my Cobra with pretty much A class everything, the ship is worth about 8 million, but getting to the next "rung" in the ship "ladder" means either hundreds of hours of grind, killing ships with 20k bounties, or selling the Cobra for a Type x and climbing the ladder via trading, which I just don't want to do. I feel like I'm in a money trap with no way out. The combat focused careers need some real TLC from the devs or they will just die a death and it really will become space truck simulator.

Unfortunately, everything you said is true in my experience. When a game corrals you into a grind because it lacks the content to inspire you, it really ceases to be a medium of entertainment. There aren't enough ships, there aren't enough reasons to get other ships, and there aren't enough sources of income to justify the expenses of the current selection of ships.

The way I see it, since the content has yet to be added, I am hoping the Thargoids will be more than a) only appearing in USS or b) only appearing in 'kill 3 Thargoids for 150,000 credits' missions. If, they are a worthy addition to the game, I figure I'm going to need a decent ship, so I'm doing the trading grind now to get an Anaconda, and maybe a Corvette, so I can then switch to combat.
If nothing concrete appears within say a month, maybe two at most, I'll probably drift back to PS4 until SC releases; either way, SC is the end game, no doubt about it.

/agree

I loved the first Elite game back in the early 90's as it was the first PC game I ever bought. I will play ED for a year or two on-and-off just because of that to be honest, is it awesome fun, no not realy. It feels like a fragmented game based on a good idea but made up of lots of parts that contradict each other as much as they compliment each other, almost like its been in development for decades by a team of people pulling each other in different directions (which is basicaly the case). The assumption seemed to be that an MMO element would make it better, only problem is that there are plenty of MMO's that do it so much better and I now realise that one of the best things about the original elite game was that you didnt have a load of idiot human players doing their best to get in your way for no reason!
