Everyone's opinion on Multicrew!

So today, I was playing Elite Dangerous Multicrew, doing some Exploration, and we've gone to land on a planet to go visit some "Geological Locations", they turned out to be Geysers. Anyway, we go there and couldn't deploy our SRV, first thoughts was that it was either bugged or there wasn't enough space for the hanger to come down, so we went somewhere clearer, now this place we went was much flatter, almost smooth. However to our surprise we had exactly the same issue, so we looked into this and found out that in multicrew you cannot deploy an SRV! Now that was quite annoying, but when I had to go I left the multicrew, because I have to go, and was looking forward to the millions of credits I had earned. So then I left waiting for my "Multicrew Report" to load up. However when it popped up my credit total was at 0... Now I was upset. I had a look online and apparently, unlike any other Multicrew activity, the main person has to actually give in the credits. So as an overall view, Multicrew made me sit through hours of scanning, to then get a GRAND TOTAL of 0 credits... So what's your opinion on Multicrew? 🤣

I'm impressed you managed to stay in m/c for that long - always boots me after minutes. I would say : needs work, but I'd rather have space legs & bases, thanks.

What activity?

Edit: Oh and what's your channel?
Usually at Cmdrs meetings, when we all sit together, except the OLey (one of us which lives further away!) we jump in his ship, stating nasty comments about his flying skills and picture his flight habbits (only usuable in private channels OC.) ;)

I love multicrew, despite its flaws. To me it's a no brainer that a game like elite should have such a feature, even if we mostly take it for granted. Elite would be weaker without it, even if we rarely use it.

It's often the ONLY way I can play with friends, who want to love the game, but don't have the time to invest, or keep up with my activities.

Stability - With friends, we almost never disconnect now. With randoms, it's touch and go. Likely it's players networking not right, upnp, port forwarding, bandwidth etc... I know my friends are set up right, so we have minimal issues.

Bugs - yeah, there have been a few. Some have been fixed. Struggling to think of any game breakers right now, but mostly I am at the Helm. Am still trying to prove a new one re. caustic damage to fighters.

Functionality - this is where I feel the biggest issues are. I don't want to go off topic here, but for example (and these are just ones I'd expect relatively easy to add given the current designs constraints, but let's let them focus on 2020 first!)
  • gunner can't see Signals in FSS. They can only scan bodies, which is frankly only useful for Exploration game-loops. Where they earn ZERO progression anyway, and can't even SRV if a probe turns up something. For most other game-loops scanning Signals is useful - please fdev.
  • Fighters don't have data-link scanners. So they can't even participate there, or hear the outstanding voiced parts of the game.
  • a mining fighter with pulse wave scanner.
  • give fighters a 1tcargo bay to - be useful, collect mats for themselves even.

My gut feeling is multicrew was lovingly implemented by fdev, and they'd know better than all of us that shoehorning something like that in an existing codebase leads to compromise, and constraints we have now. My hope is the "New era" development will address a lot of these things, in what was probably a creaking codebase. they all creak, eventually. DB more or less said new era includes reworking alot of their current systems. (see Youtube, The Buur Pit's "Witchspace News for the 15th of November 2019").

So fingers crossed some of the issues come out in the 2020 wash-up! I'd still rather have MC than not.

it would be FANTASTIC if it wasn't reliant on peer to peer connections utilizing a shopping micro transactions server (low tier bandwidth hired amazon servers) to act as a tel operator and putting your conference call through which is in effect exactly what is happening
have a look at PLANETSIDE 2 its free to play (youtube)to see what kinda centralized server this game should have been run on since launch 2013 I can say with confidence 90% of player issues are amazon server related in some way
if this game was run via a central server like planetside they would have sold 5 times the amount of copies easily as word spread...………………..
it is my view FD as a company had a cut off its nose to spite its own face business model in partnering amazon as its service provider.
The funny thing is with some drastic management action cut the amazon deal etc this game could still be a massive success
it would need to be almost totally rewritten to work on a centralised server once re released the rising profits would take care of everything else...…….
imagine every instance with an abundance of players going about there business all of whom you can chat wing etc with instantly with no fuss...…..
sales would increase exponentially literally overnight if this game ran like the CEO originally intended it too.

When the multicrew came out, me and my friend were anxious to test it out. I invite my friend in, yay, we're flying in the same ship. Ok, but just flying around is useless... So I landed on this planet (with a ship with 2x SRVs) with a plan to go and gather some resources together. And then my friend tries to take the SRV... well, as we know it now, he couldn't. And we haven't multicrewed since... As you may imagine, the amount of disappointment in this feature was huge... And the fact that this hasn't still been fixed... since this is a clearly a bug... this can't be by design, right? No one would design such an useless feature? FDEV, I WAS DISAPPOINT (insert meme pic)... and I still am. Hate myself (supposedly a grown man) for being this invested in a game...
