It seems that everything I thought was true isn't so.

When I was little, America was a heroic nation that had fought the N-word with a Z-s.

It turns out that Churchill had to send Intrepid to trick them into it, because huge swathes of that population was just as racist, and political figures had massive investments in Germany at that time. There wasn't any military action taken as a result of some "moral outrage" - the US was hit at Pearl Harbour and dragged into the conflict, even as it turned away ships carrying Holocaust refugees.

When I was little, Sir Winston Churchill had a good name.

Turns out that he presided over similar concentration camps as the Germans, in the British Empire, despised Ghandi so much that he advocated for the man to starve to death, and was deeply racist. "Keep England White" was a slogan that he wanted to use, along with chemical weapons against "uncivilized tribes" like the Kurds.

Mohandas Ghandi.
A champion of the downtrodden, and a born avatar of Equality?

Not so much. Hailing from South Africa, Ghandi was convinced that Blacks were incorrigibly lazy as a young man. Despite his upbringing, he did manage to grow into a better man in the end, becoming a strong vocal opponent of India's despicable caste system.

The Space Program

Humanity's greatest endeavour, collectively striving to understand the Universe, and to touch the stars?
Nope.
This was a race between two groups of monkeys to master the technology to throw poop at each other. The great Space Race had a main purpose: to get a delivery system for atomic warheads ahead of the other guys, in order to dominate the planet.

The Church.

It was something good and true, in my childhood. It's officers were people you were supposed to trust.
Now, it is become a cartoonishly villainous organisation, a threat to children directly, and a threat to the species in general. Trafficking in lies on an industrial scale, its waning influence is now something to celebrate.

Butter.

Formerly a thing to avoid, according to the Medical Establishment, because those saturated fats will give you lethal cholesterol and kill you.
Now?
Butter is considered vastly better for people to eat than the tasteless trans-fat laden poison known as margarine.

Speaking of Doctors, here's a bunch of them smoking cigarettes in advertisements.

Ok, **** it, Bruce Lee was for real.

Charles Atlas.

This dork thought he was a real he-man, and could sell the secrets of muscular development to people back in the sixties. This very photo was in every comic book, advertising the Atlas Method, to help those 98 pound weaklings not get sand kicked in their faces at the beach.
He ran that as a business, and received a letter from India, from Mohandas Ghandi, asking for help.

I kid you not.

There's one consolation.
All these insights will be reversed again in a few years, and then they will be reversed again, and reversed again and reversed again and so on.
Most important thing to take away is that it all doesn't matter one bit for your everyday life.

I have a copy of that book. A great martial arts reference and a very comprehensive and functional fighting style/technique.
.

It's pretty good from a philosophical standpoint, but doesn't cover positional hierarchy at all.
To be fair most arts don't delve into it, even grappling arts.

BJJ allows you to do all of the things martial arts are supposed to:
Defend yourself from a stronger opponent.
Do so without hurting them should you choose.
Kill another person with your bare hands.

It's very systematic and logical too.

Well duh. Where the frack have you been man?

Well duh. Where the frack have you been man?

Literally: on an island.

During WWII, we were a British colony, and some of my countrymen fought for the Empire. One pilot died in a Spitfire. My grandfather helped the US build a naval base, and it was a long standing tradition here that we were on the right side. It was generally assumed that the Americans were too, from the start, a view that persisted for decades because of popular culture. There were no TV shows or movies in which there was ambiguity about US moral purpose until the 70's.

I guess Nixon and Vietnam tipped things over irretrievably. I was about 10 at that point.

History Books are Written by the Victors.
And many Victors will leave out Details on their own Shortcomings.

Many People look back and are Horrified by how Badly Germany Treated Jews.
Yet barely anyone mentions how Germans were Treated in the USA or how Indians were Treated in India by the United Kingdom.
Even the Gulags in the Soviet Union have only become a Topic for History in the west after the Cold War broke out and thus the Soviets became Enemies.
And when nowdays Countries still hold Festivals for the Army the Western World looks there with Horror. Not understanding how they could possibly praise these Monsters.
Not Realizing that to them these Monsters were the very Freedom Fighters that the Western Alliance likes to claim themselves to be. Because they had been living Suppressed under similar Conditions as Jews in Germany and thus as they were not Jews often could lead a better Life and have far more Rights and Justice than they could have ever dreamed about before.

And this can be seen almost everywhere.
Every War. Be it the Frensh Revolution or the War for American Independence.
Has just so much more Backstory than most People think.
Any Historical Event there is. Is just telling a very small bit of the Story and extremely often leaving out Tons of Unpleasant Details that might very well Change the Opinion of People on who might have been the Hero in that Story.

Instead of being Angry about it.
Be Happy that you could Open the Eyes and actually start Thinking for yourself enough to Realize that the simple Advice to not Believe Everything your Told has 100 times more Weight than the vast Majority gives it.
Because this Realization alone might offer you some more Paths in Life that so many people will never be able to take.
