Evil PvP thoughts...

I'm just waiting for the day when a PvPer with far too much time on their hands makes a special effort to fly his combat pimped ship out to Sagittarius A*, and wait very very patiently for explorers to slaughter...

The anguish would be huge to fly all that way and then be taken out by a fellow CMDR!

On the flip side, most explorers can out-jump any combat ship, so once they FSD out to another system they'd be safe.

Fortunately I can't imagine that anyone who is serious enough for PvP griefing would ever have the patience to make their way all the way to Sagittarius A*, let alone have the patience to just sit and wait for explorers (who may be well playing solo in any case to be able to take 4K screenshots)...

"and a anaconda explore with A rated non-laser weapons for smaller power plant and survival kits shows up"

"griefer" O_O

could be an interresting fight a long way from home

Hmm, Sagittarius A might be a bit far out... but in principle, the problem could be real. What about Betelgeuse, Mintaka black hole, Rigel... and all the other sightseeing points out there... a few hundred ly out, but anyone can reach them within 3 hours or less. Naturally, the dark pleasure of the hunter is diminished somewhat by the shorter distance and travelling time of his prey.

Btw, I explore in open mode...

Haggis McMoose,
the bait of Betelgeuse

Yeah - I used griefer, because no-one is going to be "pirating" people who aren't carrying cargo, and it certainly wouldn't be someone interested in a fair fight, because virtually all serious explorers are unarmed.

Basically anyone doing this would be doing it purely to ruin someone's week after they had spent a long time exploring and travelling and collecting system data that they have no physical way to sell. The only challenge in it is finding the target, and if that's their goal then they can just explore in open and hail someone after meeting them.

No - the only term for someone who would actually go this far out of their way to deliberately target a helpless target for no gain to themselves and a potential colossal loss for their target (all lost exploration data) would be "griefer".

Edit: To clarify, I do not think all PvP is "griefing" - only PvP where there is no expectation for the target to be able to defend themselves, no consequences for the attacker, no meaningful gain for the attacker, and severe loss for the target. Basically where the action is done purely to cause the opponent "grief" and nothing else.

In inhabited space there are bounties, there are other players, there are stations where people can run towards to be safe, people can be expected to have saved recently and had a chance to cash in bounties and exploration data etc. Players can possibly be carrying bigger weaponry or defence than expected, etc etc. This is absolutely not the case in the scenario I described in the original post.

An enemy's loss is most certainly a gain, and potentially a far more profound one than any bounty or cargo is likely to be.

Unless all other CMDRs are your enemy, I hardly think that killing a random explorer would be an enemy's loss...

I can totally see some explorer being jealous of exploration and wishing for all other explorers to vanish so that he is the only one and the best, both from rp and oorp perspective. Less explorers = more fame and money for exploring.
