Evochron Mercenary : Planetary landing AND mecha ?!!

Evochron is an amazing one-man project. Planetary landings are well done, with instant death if your angle of approach is wrong and such. Planets are tiny though.

I'm stunned. I have played ED about 100 hours and love it very much. Not until now I started to yearn for more features and some content... Waiting Horizons eagerly. So, decided to search other games if I've missed something similar to ED and stumbled across this. Mild interest changed to decision to buy this game from Steam after some videos and very positive reviews. Even if I have limited time, I thought I must see this. Now I've just completed tutorial, and what a tutorial! Must be one of the best in these types of games! Long, thorough and entertaining. And ship systems feel much more complicated and sim-like than ED:s to be honest. Interesting navigation. Separate shield management for all sides. Newtonian flight model. And content! Trading with other ships. Answering distress calls. Planetary landings. Walker-type transport on surfaces. Passengers. Hiring a crew. Building stations. Lot's of stuff I would like to see in ED. Lot's of stuff I think we may not see on ED. And even if this is 5 years old game, graphics are still pretty. And developer makes updates. Sounds are poor though.

And this game was made by ONE MAN. I am stunned. Just... stunned. To be honest, in features, this game sweeps floor with current state of Elite Dangerous. Don't get me wrong, I love Elite, it just feels like something is wrong when one man can make a game like this, that has so much stuff ED hasn't.

Selfie from the very first spawn in the Evochron universe :) Lets see if game really gives what it promises!

There is already a thread, just a few down from this one about Evochron Merc. Yes, its a great game and apparently he's working on a second. The planets are small, but so are ED's at the moment and probably will be when Horizon first comes out. That of course may change later.
But EM is a good game, I've played for a few years now, it does ED better than FD do it. Obviously you have to forgive the graphics to a certain degree, but graphics not being that important to me, whereas content is, then EM wins out against ED by a long way.

Ah, thanks for the heads up! If graphics are even remotely modern, they'll do fine for me. I honestly think that so far EM does very good job!

FD said 1:1 scale...so say if you go to the moon (our moon) it will be the exact size of the moon. That's what 1:1 scale means anyway...

Also i played EM for a long time and loved it but i fail to see how it has more content than ED? It has a wider variety of missions i guess but a lot of them are pretty boring and simple and not useful or interesting past the beginning (liek cleaning solar panels or delivering satellite....nevermind racing which is cool in theory but boring in practice). Finding uncharted planets by aiming for the nearest star is cool but you don't even get money for discovering planets. You go and land on them and it's cool but there's nothing gained from it.

I wish ED would do emergency calls though. That's how id make moeny in EM. I'd load up with the most commonly wanted goods in emergencies, like water or food or whatever, and wait for a call to come in.

There ARE things EM does better than ED but overall, ED is the superior game (no shame for EM in this..its one guy making it). For one once you figure out the combat in EM, npcs are useless. You can fight 16 at once and never risk death because you can just drift circles around them.

edit: another thing i liked in Em is the missions where you have to go scan a capital ship. I liked the risk of it, i'd rush for it and then hide under it hoping the escort and cannons would not plow through my shield before id' finished the scan. It was short but intense. I think technically you're supposed to use a cloaking device to do those but i didn't have one. It would be nice to have something like this in ED. Also...escort missions. kinda boring in Em though since its just defend this ship until it can jump in hyperspace.

Cloaking device is in Pearl system, The Earth landing video was by "Cindy". The only person I ever known of to land on Earth in EM. And i played along time.

Well, yes. Instead of few boring missions of ED, Evochron Mercenary has wider variety of boring missions. :) If you wan't to put it that way. Nevertheless, more variation. Like said, I love ED. I just wish it had more content.

What Evochron Mercenary has that Elite Dangerous still does not in no particular order (minus what already is mentioned here and those features that are basically similar to ED):

- Very detailed training mode, covers basically everything you need to know about the ship controls and get you started in the game
- BETTER flight model that requires you to often fly without inertia dampeners to save fuel using short burns with your thrusters, like REAL space craft. And information provided in your cockpit dashboard to be able to do so.
- Planets, stars etc. gravity actually affects your ship by pulling it from it's trajectory
- Navigation, that does not quarantee that you find something, you might jump to an empty space, not near a star every time. You can jump anywhere in the space.
- Visual customization of your ship. Choosing physical frame, cargo hold, wings etc. and their placement (limited, but still cool)
- Building stations
- Trading between ships and more diverse cargo system, you can change weapons from your cargo hold, fill your fuel tank etc.
- Controlling your own NPC wing/fleet
- Hiring crew members with special abilities
- Deploying equipment, like mining drones, fuel reservoirs, repair stations etc.
- Building/designing customized weapons
- Reqruit npc ships

I just feel that currently EM provides more tools, better "set" to immerse you inside a universe where you control your own space ship and try to make a living.

Edit. And I think racing is fun! Flight model really shines in racing missions.

My brother used to play EM and I used to get really into it, he made a clan that got pretty well known in the Evoverse, the KL1 or the KLONE, a race of evil robots that would hunt and (try) to destroy the likes of the Freedom Fighters >.< painful to watch him being destroyed over and over but funny none the less :) It's a great game though and I really enjoyed the many hours watching it. EM has a lot of systems that I want to find in ED, like Andromeda with the blue skies o.o and the UFOs in a far beyond hard to find system that was just a rumour. Still it was great and I even saw Cindy flying around a few times, there was a secret way to land on Earth but my brother had no idea how to do it, the developer of the game never told the secret as far as I know, amazing that he made the game independently and how big it is, so much work went into to that! If ED gets close to that it will be perfect :) (Planets landings is the way forward! Oh and lots of secrets, and aliens!) xP

Discovered the Evochron games some years back, think it was called Legends at the time. Had some fun with it intermittently over the years, mostly it just left me pining for a new Elite game though ;)

Top effort for just one guy.

these are vids reelased ealrier this year of the prototype for the new Evochron he's working on. Planets are now fiv etime sbigger. theres more than one cockpit, textures of ships have improved considerably. there's a new mission type in which you have to shoot down asteroids before they hit a planet.

honestly because there is never any loading, exploration on evochron is a lot better than in ED but there's no rewards. Exploration is really not on rails like in EM, it's pretty risky. I hope he adds more a point to finding uncharted planets.

I came across this a while back looking for something to fill the gap after I'd had my time in EV Nova. I wanted EV Nova's awesome but 3D. Finding EM was a good day :D Sadly I've never got far into it. Technical issues with my old comp + finding it a bit long-winded sorta put an end to it. Overall a pretty great game though.

The ship design type part was a pretty interesting thing (with the shape and scale sliders, that sorta thing). Planetary landings and the requirement not to be a missile was very cool. Planets felt a bit empty though, and so maybe pointless? Other than landing in the cities of course. I didn't get round to having a go with the land walker/vehicle thingy though so that's probably why I thought that.

Oh and there was something of a main story to follow, wasn't there? Started by getting to New Hope. Too many other things distracted me before I got there ;)

Still pining for that "perfect" open-but-not-empty sandbox-but-not-totally-left-to-it space sim. I think EM is closer than ED, at least in it's current state, and probably with the direction it seems to me going. The new Evochron will probably be better still!

I posted the video in question, not "Cindy". Austin from Evochron. "Cindy" was full of it most of the time. It can be do in 2.X, but I shall never tell. I'll have to by Legacy one of these days and see it the method has changed.
