Excess cargo rewards. Where do they go?

If you don't have cargo space to accept the cargo reward from missions, it will say in red "excess cargo (xy)".
So does it go in a retrievable cache when you have room? Where does it go? Do we lose it forever?

The Bit Bucket for now. Frontier has hinted that the ability to store at least Engineer specific commodities at their bases is coming in a future update. When that will happen is anyone's guess, but until then, you need to sell off what you don't need, or just dump it in space. The game should also warn you if you don't have room for the mission rewards. It isn't a real obvious notice though. Sometimes you only figure this out when you are unable to turn in a new completed mission.
