Hardware & Technical Excited now. Treated myself.. :)

I've been living with the same PC for over 8 years now, the only thing I've updated is the graphics card in that time. The single core athlon CPU is doing it's best, the ASUS MOBO has seen better times, and to honest, the 80GB HDD tends to protest quite a bit these days. Don't even think about asking me about the RAM, oh I may have managed to squeeze in another 256MB in to it at some point but I'm not too sure.

So I finally took the plunge and got some new bits n bobs from Scan.co.uk One of there emails triggered the reach-for-the-wallet response. A Intel i7 4770k bundle ( MOBO + 8GB ) plus a Samsung 840 EVO 120.

I'm looking forward to not having to wait around 3-5 mins for booting up - sheer luxury I know!

The old graphics card is now my week link, but seeing as up until a couple of months ago I was still using a Nvidia 7600, the new AMD 6450(I think?) will do for a while yet - hell the onboard graphics may even be better..

This isn't meant to be a boastful post at all, just a 'phew' finally didn't post, and maybe inspire others who have been waiting in the dark ages of computering to put down the coal shovels and step into the light.. :D

Hey you got start somewhere Nagual and by the sounds of things you have a pretty good base there to build a very powerful PC indeed. You still have plenty time to get the other bits you need. :)

Be sure to get a quality PSU for that lot, Nagual.

Yarp. It's next on the list, luckily my graphics card isn't power hungry ie doesn't need it's own extra power. However, I realise I'll need to upgrade it as and when I get a newer one.

EDIT: ach.. just got an email. Not getting it til next week. A weeks delivery.. you'd have thought I lived on the moon.

nice i like the poom. (thats a poem thats a bit poo).

I just replaced my son's mobo, cpu and psu... then my main PC died...and I had to use his old mobo to fix my poota!!

BUt in the ultimate insult today, my sons laptop is away for repair, the fan stopped working about a week after the last repair. They phone today to say that liquid damage in the optical drive mean the guarantee is void.

I said the liquid damage in the functioning drive that the repair is not about will void the repair on the fan that is unrelated?

BIG STINKY letter sent off asking for it in writing. Then the STINKIER letters start and post to HP directly to show how a licensed repair centre is treating customers.

I put in my letter that I used to work for them and I was unaware they had introduced a practise of finding reasons to invalidate warantees rather than fixing the faults at hand.

'The one-L lama, he's a priest
The two-L llama, he's a beast
But I will bet my silk pyjama
There isn't any three-L lllama!'

Sort of reminded me of The llama song

That's just underhand and nasty. You can easily argue that each separate component should be treated separately as if you bought them separately, rather than a whole. They'd probably argue that the guarantee is expressed as a whole unit, to which I'd counter with each component has a manufacturer guarantee - often longer than the whole units one too.

EDIT / RANT

So because I live on the other side of the universe according to most postal services, the courier is delivering my package to another courier to deliver to me. This is quite common practice. What really grinds my gears is that it would have been quicker to deliver it to my house, it's on the way. Or to use ParcelForce, which generally does okay around here, ok their 48 hour delivery is often 72 but thems the breaks when you live in the oort cloud it seems.....

Enjoy the new system when it arrives :)

I was too impatient to wait for Haswell, and built an Ivy Bridge (3770) system at the end of last year instead. Like you I'm holding off on upgrading my graphics card though, until E: D is released. My GTX480 works fine for now anyway.

You will love the SSD too. I recently replaced my ancient Seagate 7200rpm with a 500Gb Samsung 840, and the difference in speed is staggering - from POST beep to usable desktop now takes 15 seconds :)

Just make sure to install Windows in UEFI mode rather than BIOS mode though, to optimize your boot time. (apologies if you know this already - it caught me out though as I wasn't really aware of the benefits of UEFI when I first built my new system).

To be honest there isn't too much difference between Ivy Bridge and Haswell just now, with comparable CPUs, not only that but depending on the benchmark / test even 1st gen 2500ks aren't too far from them. I was going to go for an i5 but had a thunk and thunk that perhaps, just maybe I may get my finger out and do some video work again, so having the extra threads will be of great help.

Considering de-lidding it too at some point. I'll probably not overclock until I get a custom cooler ( ideally water, maybe a corsair 100 or the likes) then see what the temps are like before thinking about de-lidding.

Cheers for the tip on not using BIOS for the install, I'll admit I'd not even thought of that.

Well was D day. Nothing arrived. Gave the local couriers a call. They never got it, even though it was apparently on it's way last Thursday. Seem it got lost at a security hub in Manchester... go figure. Now I need to wait until they investigate. Not Scans fault, it's the couriers, DPD you suck goats nether regions! And they got my address wrong..

Number of house.
Town.

Really well done DPD.

**slow clap**

Crikey, that sucks alright. Waiting on some printer ink from Amazon at the moment which seems to be lost in the Irish Triangle.

Ding Ding!

Round Two!

Still not found the parcel, and last week I suggested they don't wait and just send me a new one.. Today I get a call to ask if this is what I want. Yes says I, but the other one might turn up says them, I'll take that risk says I, but this one might get lost too says them. Really? I mean.. but.. erm.. really... that's what you say?

I gets in and checks the emails...

They get the bleeding delivery address wrong! What is so difficult about copying details across? I know... there isn't anything difficult. I speak of this with more than a little authority having worked doing IT support for BP Europe & Africa. Can you use copy n paste? Yes? Well done, you can do more than these numpties.

No idea if the chap on the other end of the phone managed to pass the message on to whoever as the tracker isn't working yet....

Oh dear [insert deity of choice], give me strength...

EDIT:

Tracker is now up and it seem my fairly assertive complaints have been heard and responded appropriately to. The Address has been correctly changed! Yay! Now can they actually deliver?

Cross yer fingers for me! ;)

I feel for you, that must be so frustrating. I know how impatient and excited I get once I've ordered new PC parts. I always want eveything delivered yesterday.

Hope it all shows up soon :)

Has it arrived yet? I am feeling frustrated on your behalf and anxious to know  Fingers and toes crossed :)

Now the tracker and alert SMS are doing their thing. A bit over the top really. Got a txt saying it was being delivered by a bloke called Colin this afternoon - impressive seeing as it hadn't arrived at the local couriers depot. Maybe they were doing it themselves seeing as someone had messed up before?

Nope, didn't arrive by anyone much less someone called Colin.

Got another txt saying it would be between 8am and 6pm today by just a driver...

Nope.

Tracker said between 7am and 8pm....

Give you a ha'penny if you guess what happened.... lol

That's poor. :( I actually really like DPD - I've always got a 1 hour delivery window (via text on the day) and they always delivered within that time.

Oh, and the driver really was called Piotr, same as on the text! ;)

You really are having bad luck with this!

I have just found out that my new laptop is also going to be delivered by DPD too. I haven't hada bad experience with them before though.

<accepts an unexpected delivery from some guy named Colin - signs for it as Nagual the Shapeshifter>
Oh look - a box of PC components! Cool!
