Exclamation point - why?

Just wondering - why is there an exclamation mark beside the speech balloon in the comms panel? It is there permanently and seems rather pointless. I thought perhaps it was to indicate a message exists but it is there from the moment the game is loaded even when there are no messages. Is there a point to it, do you think?

This used to be bugged - and always showed a message pending.

They fixed it this patch!

Thing is... it still detects the tiny notifications like "Entered (system name) System channel" as a message that needs highlighting...

So, I mean... it's technically fixed, but yeah, to get rid of that, you need to almost constantly scroll through all your tabs.

What it needs, is to firstly, ignore those they are useless - then, it either needs a way to select which message you care about (as it also shows up when you get the TOP 1% of all liners!" messages...) or, only pop up when you get a direct message - from a player, or some actually relevant NPC (like a pirate saying to drop stuff?)

OK - I see. Yeah - it is a bit of a nuisance - nothing more. But really, quite pointless. You don't have to enter the system chat - nor do you need to enter a system. It is there from the moment the game is loaded. And never goes away. Actually I've always thought that the whole message system is crude, bugged, and rather Unix-like in the way it is controlled. It comes across as rather amateur and hastily written to be honest. Messages appear randomly and go away randomly in both the comms panel and the info panel. Never mind - not a biggie. At least I know now that I am not misunderstanding something useful. Lol.

It is the missing link to the complete model of astrophysics, so removing it will cause all stars to move to immediate supernovae and planets to implode.

I also suspect it may be a letter i, masquerading in disguise, to confuse anyone who needs it to form sentences in comms.

Other than those options, it's just a pita.

Without it, the entire game would break.

Knowing FD, probably😛

In the chat's 1st tab(on the left) it has 3 sub tabs : MAIN - DIRECT - SYSTEM
Any new message in any of those and the pesky exclamation comes back.
Select those 3 and it goes away :)

While we're already at mystery exclamation marks - can someone enlighten me the rules exclamation mark triangle follow? The one next to clock (upper right). From what I undestand it's supposed to notify of some kind of danger (overheating - mark; impact while approaching planet - mark, etc). What I don't get is it flashing when I'm just cruising through an empty system, jumping or what not. Hull at 100%, modules at 100%, no cargo, heat ranging from 39-65%, no enemies, no passengers... yet it is - flashing for no reason.

Oh, if, you're bothered with chat mark I have two solutions (if applicable ofc, sorry console players):
  • change HUD colors so it may not be as eye catching as it is
  • increase FOV past what game allows (60) to 70-80 range. HUD becomes smaller and bit further away so the chat will be less noticeable.

It's still a bit buggy though - you can reliably make it go away if you have Local and System chat tabbed, you still have to go into System chat each time to make it disappear, which is a pain in itself.

But if you have local/system chat combined, it doesn't always disappear even though all messages should be updated as 'read' instantly. Even if you scroll through all your messages, it won't go away unless you switch back to tabbed view and scroll through system chat again.

Probably best to just accept/ignore the ! being there, as it seems clear FD don't have a handle on their code to fix something as seemingly simple as a message-read flag state.

It also comes on if you have limpets in tow.

As for it happening in SC, don't think I ever noticed it beyond the situations you describe.

Ok, didn't knew that. Next time I'm mining I'll pay attention to it. But sometimes I see it flashing when Im about to jump off the system while exploring. I started to treat it like an indication light in old cars. Some dashboard warnings flash for no apparent reason. Must be the age. My current Cutter made way from Bubble to Colonia to Sag* without proper maintenance.

Oh well, another feature.

Yeah, it's the proximity warning (because your own limpets are close to your ship lol). The flashing red warning lights in the cockpit can be more annoying in some ships, like the Krait where they're quite in your face so to speak.

Now you mentione it's proximity warning... it now starts to make sense. Probably I'm passing some USS and sensors pick that and notice me about that. Since I'm not paying attention to such things I get those "ghost" flashes.

So in the end it IS a feature. Sadly the one I'm not using...

ObiW - you just earned a void beer. It may take a while before you get it since I'm at Sag* now and heading to Beagle... Ok, will deal this another way. I spoke with a bartender in Explorer's Anchorage at Stuemeae FG-Y d7561 and left you there a suspended beer. It's already payed, if you'll be passing through just drop by for a cold one. It will be waiting for your.
