There has been a lot of criticism of Elite Dangerous on these forums lately, and some of it quite deserved.
I wanted to take a minute away from the ED bashing to describe the most exhilirating gaming experience that I have ever had in any game ever...
I was in the Leesti system when I got into a fight with a pirate in a Federal dropship. Although only in my hunting Eagle, so normally a beefed up dropship would be a bit of a risk, but when I saw the 97k bounty greed took over and I just had to go for it.
He managed to evade my first interdiction attempt and flew behind the planet leesti in an attempt to escape but I went around the other side and soon caught him up again, this time I managed to drag him out of supercruise.
His first volley hit me straight away and took out a good chunk of shields,He had no shields himself but I can't deploy my multicannon and Kill warrant scanner at the same time, but I held my nerve and kept him in my sights until the KW Scanner had finished its job before deploying my guns...
We entered into a dance of trying to get on each others tail for several minutes, taking shots at each other as we jousted through the void, I got his hull down to 76% but my own shields were failing so I boosted away to try and make time to recharge them.
It was only as I started to put some distance between us that he unleashed his first volley of missiles, I dodged the first but the second and third finished my shields off, the fourth also missed, but then he launched a second volley. The first struck and took a chunk out of my hull, I started spinning and boosting like mad, as two more missiles homed in... they both missed.
Another minute or two of ducking and weaving and shields were recharged, he was still onmy tail, so I cut the flight assist, flipped over and hit full reverse, he was in range of my multicannon but I was out of range of his lasers so I let rip. I adjusted my speed to keep the perfect distance between us as I flew backwards, firing my muticannon like a madman. His hull was down to 17% when my ammo ran out, I knew i'd have to go in closer and finish the job with my lasers but I had full shields now and plenty of hull left. I re-engaged forward throttle and went full speed with lasers blasting.
But he had a surprise in store, he'd saved some missiles and he let them loose as we crossed paths once more, bam, bam, bam, they took out my shields and some more hull.
I span around and went straight back at him like Sir Lancelot on PCP. he turned and boosted, wham ! he hit head on.
My eagle span wildly out of control flames and smoke spewing and my canopy blown out. I saw an explosion as my quarry's hull failed him and breathed a sigh of relief....But the relief was fleeting, My canopy was shattered, my RemLok helmet sealed around me and a message, saying I had only 5 minutes of life support left flashed before me.
5 minutes, and I've got to get the ship back into supercruise, find the nearest station, get there, and dock... 5 mins to do all that or I loose the bounty, and my ship insurance, and the 260k of uncollected Imperial bounties that I have accumulated....And one more thing which was a complete surprise...with the canopy gone you even loose the HUD, its actually a really cool effect but which makes targeting and flying to the station and landing even more difficult.
Those were the longest most anxious 5 minutes of my life, But I made it back safely, I even had time to load up some screen capture software and record the last minute. And that sweaty nerve racking experience makes me realise just what an exiting and wonderfull game this can be..
