Exlorer base camp

I need a little advice from experienced explorers. I'm going to start my won grand tour this weekend. Can someone give me a good "last chance saloon" system to aim for. One that is right on the very edge of occupied space where I can park up the anaconda and jump in the asp.

Cheers

There's a large group of players who would recommend Pand.

I've not been there myself yet, as far as I can remember, but it's right at the "north" of occupied space - positive Z coordinate.

Choose any. Doesn't really matter. And it all depends on which direction you are heading out in. Just look on the galactic map and find something on the edge in the right direction.

Personally, i'd leave it wherever you home base is (if you have one). Last time i went out exploring i returned from quite a different angle than i left in.

Canopus is the furthest I've seen outside the main cluster of human space, if you're planning on heading in that direction. I think you can buy an Asp there too but you'll probably have to shop around for outfitting.

these systems seems to be biggest "holes" in inhabitet space:
Fomalhaut, LHS 450, Exioce, 17 Draconis, Aditi, BD+22 4939, Canopus, Exphiay, Fehu, LTT 9846, Pepper, Quince

btw equip your asp and sell your annie. when you will come back, you wont have to go to specific system. remind of "griefers", they are all waiting for you :)

I'm more concerned with the fact that I intend to kit the Asp out purely for exploring. No guns, no shields. So I want to minimise the chance combat before I'm far enough out to be able to forget about it.

yup pand is the last stop before the B CRA nebula, its out with the col .... sector. and bring back youre data when youre finished, the purple central industries is a good place to drop off exploration data, we have done a 80 LY in all direction collection so u can also buy system data for inclose areas. Theres nothing from there outwards, the are fitting and refuelling. And if u bring a hold full of rares and drop it off at the station here youll make about 20k per unit.

Not really sure what your intent is. If you want to buy an Asp, then you probably want a high tech system. Head off in the direction you want to go, and only filter in high tech and extraction systems. Then the last high tech should be obvious (the last outpost of colonisation will almost always be an extraction system). But that may not have all you want. Frankly, I have a home base in the middle of colonised space, and I just leave from there. It is not all that far to the edge.

I use WALPI as a base if heading in the direction of Orion, you also have the two Supergiants HYADUM an HYADUM II nearby. Would definitely recommend visiting the ringed planet very close to HYADUM, a very scary place when that close to a supergiant.

Ditching weapons is fine, but I'd keep the shields. They're too handy for landing and interdictions. When you leave or come back you're running a gauntlet for a couple of hundred light years trying to get days worth of data back to a station. I keep the lightest shields so my range isn't hampered too much but I can take a few hits or survive a hard landing. I've never bothered with any particular station, I just head off in a direction and see where I end up.

I personally wouldn't recommend heading anywhere without shields, but to each their own I guess.

Here's my current loadout for exploring in my Asp, it also has 2 heat-sink launchers, a PDT & a chaff launcher. 24l/y jump range is more than enough for exploring. Been at it for 2 weeks and have had 0 trouble so far except for getting a bit close to a couple of stars. I've made 4 mill so far.

You can get over 33LY range in an Asp with a class 5 shield and a pair of beam lasers. IMO it's worth it for the peace of mind on your homeward journey. YMMV.

Agreed, and now that you can filter on star class in the galaxy map your journey home can be really quick.

... more importantly, Sandro has said that the current mechanic where you can submit to interdictions, and then just boost, boost, boost and FSD away was not intended, and that they will change it. Which is understandable, even if it will make our lives more awkward in the twilight zone. I am on my way to the core, so cannot change my setup (I have shields but no weapons). I will not be entirely delighted if, when I eventually make it home, I fall to an NPC interdictor close to civilisation because the rules changed while I was away.

the flip side now is that USS sites as far as combat encounters now spawn less distance from settled space ( no more vipers at 2000LY out from nearest system instead they stop at about 500LY out) ive found on a recent trip is that 500LY - 2000 LY u might find prototype tech, artificats and some military plans and some loot stolen items but no ship encounters. Over 2000LY out its just u and youre scanner

Unfortunately, however, the route finder ignores your filter, making the feature much less valuable than it would otherwise have been. If you want to only visit 'interesting' systems, you still have to do it one jump at a time, though finding those interesting systems is quicker.

Also if you're worried about the dangers of leaving and re-entering human space, consider that I took a completely defenceless Hauler, no shields or anything, from Achenar to VYCM and back with no problems whatsoever. I got interdicted once by an eagle on the return journey, and I evaded it. A player interdicted me a few lightseconds from Dawes Hub in Achenar, but he turned out to be a bounty hunter and calmly left when I told him I was exploring. I even stopped boosting and let him scan me, and he didn't decide to turn my 2.2mil cr data haul into smoke. Realistically 95% of players aren't dongs, and AI are very easy to evade, so there's nothing to worry about really. If you're genuinely worried about that other 5% or just some bad luck, bring a shield generator and a field repair unit. You don't really have to go to extraordinary lengths to protect yourself if I can fly to and from the imperial capital in a ford transit.
