Newcomer / Intro Exobiology one time?

So I've just started playin with the Exo scanning stuff and I've found that once you have scanned a type that's it, you don't ever get the chance to keep scanning that one type even on a different planet?

Please give me some info on this or advice.

Technically you shouldn't encounter the same species on another planet, I think.
They tend to look similar (which is unfortunate, I still hope they're going to figure out how to generate them proceduraly) but will count as a different sample.
