I have the stations bookmarked from bubble to colonia but I also have waypoint between themselves I travel in a virtual straight line from bookmark to bookmark the whole journey I think it would be worth expanding the plotters capabilities so it can work out a route automatically from station to station without the need to save waypoints inbeween I haven't bookmarked the asteroid stations yet but it might be worth considering using the distance between them as well

Unfortunately, the number of calculations required for larger spheres of consideration would grow quite rapidly, and plot times would get ridiculously long.
We had that problem earlier on, then FD fixed it, and was able to give us 1000Ly plot ranges as a compromise.

Perhaps this is a development of ships having (or able to have) larger jump ranges. It could be worth enabling 2kLy plots for a beta or potentially 10,000ly plots (which could take minutes to plot). I don't think it's limited for gameplay reasons, only technical as Asp Explorer says.
If supplied with a warning and a way to abandon the task, it could be worth a try. I'd put it low on the priority list though, 1,000ly really is plenty for most ships on most routes.

Any idea whether the calculations are performed locally or server side? Even in dense areas I find plotting a 1kly course only takes a matter of seconds. Assuming it didn't place increased load on Frontier's servers, I'd be happy to wait longer to not have to re-plot every 20 jumps.
Perhaps limited plotting range could be a setting in the options menu. Have it default to 1kly for safety, but let people uncap it if they want to experiment with longer plots.
