"A navy cannot exist by cruisers alone."
Lord Erik Hurn III. Designer of the Glorious Class Battleship.
As it stands in game we have two capital ships the Majestic Class Interdictor and the Farragut class Cruiser. We do not know if large super-freights and tanker like vessels of Elite II's Bulk Hauler type will be seen although I dearly hope they do get added. So with this in mind I had some ideas about how to expand the fleet of the Imperial Navy, of course there would be a Federation equivalent, different name and looks but same thing basically.
So below is some ship info and i'd love to hear folks thoughts about it
Glorious Class Dreadnought.
The Glorious class is the largest warship in active Imperial service, due to the immense cost of the huge vessel (as well as their fittings for their crew) these ships are supremely rare, it is rare to see one alone but often as part of a far larger battlegroup and heavily escorted. Whilst well armed, protected and carrying the latest generation of fighters for self defence even the most polite critic could say that the Glorious handles like a house and is exceptionally slow, its huge engines straining to move its mass without endangering its structural integrity. Always a fleet flagship the Glorious is no mere showpeice but a lethal weapon in its own right that can smash aside lesser vessels with almost contemptuious ease.
Incomparable Class Battlecruiser
Far more common than the rare and expensive Glorious class, the smaller but no less impressive Incomparable's along with the Majestic Class ships are seen as the mailed fist of the Empire and its most powerful large warship. Whilst the Glorious is more potent, their rarity lessens their impact. The Incomparable has a drive system similar to that of the larger ship to provide increased speed and power to its weapons. The result is a fast and potent warship and its four frontally mounted heavy beam canons have been the end of many enemies of the Empire. Its detractors complain that the engines require additional work and are maintenance intensive but this does not detract from the popularity of the class.
Inexorable Class Carrier
Another large warship and dedicated fleet unit the Inexorable is a mobile hive for a fleet of Osprey short range interceptors. Although lacking a FSD the Osprey is exceptionally fast, manouverable and well armed with a pair of beam lasers. And more importantly, its cheap to produce and the Inexorable carries a staggering 400 of them. These can be replaced by Goshawk attack fighters who's role is more orientated towards anti-shipping strikes with their missiles. Most Inexorables carry a mix of 350 Osprey and 50 Goshawk's. To carry this huge volume of small craft as well as their support facilities, crew, fuel and munitions the Inexorable is largely defenceless against hostile warships and only has point defence batteries and short ranged anti-fighter weapons although its flanks are thick with those. Its hull is also lightly plated to save mass.
Victory Class Light Cruiser
Designed to be a lighter and cheaper brother to the Majestic class the Victory took time to find its place within the fleet (often derided as the Not Very Majestic) but its builders and Captains won over the detractors with the Victory's speed, endurance and armament. Lacking integral fighter support unlike the Majestic the Victory is quicker to answer the helm and has more powerful engines. A heavy spinal beam laser gives it it's main punch against warships that often can't match its speed and manouverability to bring their own main guns to bare. Because of this and its comparatively low construction costs the Victory is now a common sight in Imperial space and beyond.
Turbulent Class Destroyer.
One of the smallest ships in the Imperial Fleet the Turbulent is a common sight and the most widely produced ship in Imperial service. Capable of being built at smaller and less dedicated yards and slips the Turbulent class often patrols in groups, using their high speed and potent, if short ranged weapon systems to swarm and overwhelm a foe. In fleet service they often act as 'AA ships' where their massed lasers and cannons can quickly deal with fighters and larger vessels. Outside of a fleet environment the Turbulent often will be seen patrolling systems as well as escorting convoys. They have been used as VIP transports as well, as few pirates or pilots of the Pilots Federation will be willing to risk their lives fighting a well armed destroyer.
Endurance Class Fleet resupply ship.
The Endurance class and its close sister the Furious class assault ship are built and based on the same hull and are seen as the least glamourous and desirable ships to serve on in the Imperial navy, yet each one is vital in their own way. The Endurance's massive hull carries thousands upon thousands of units of water, fuel, food, munitions and spare parts in its huge cargo bays and is a vital element of the fleet when on long range missions. They represent the logistical tail of the fleet and without them the cruisers and destroyers of the Navy would run out of food and fuel whilst on campaign.
Because of their importance it is rare to see an Endurance Class ship without at least six Turbulent Class ships in escort and at least one Victory class vessel, this is in addition to their own extensive armament that is equal to a Majestic class cruiser's firepower.
The Furious, built on the same hull instead of carrying supplies, carries troops and tanks and is the primary means of invading a hostile world. They can also be used as colonisation and exploration vessels and a Furious may spend up to a year out on long distance patrol searching for new worlds to exploit and establish colonies upon them.
