Pretty difficult to say really since the actual game isn't even released yet.

You'll have to weigh things up and make a decision just like everybody else.

My estimate would be

39,90 £ for the basic game (without planet landings, without avatars) ~2014
19,90 £ Expansion 1 (planets) ~ 2015 (?)
19,90 £ Expansion 2 (avatars) ~ 2016 (?)

= 79,70 £ Total

so.. no real benefit of the 80 £ package?

they really need to announce the pricing scheme prior to Dec 6...

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that there will be more than 2 expansions to the game? Might have been on one of the Dev Diaries but couldn't swear to it? Anyone else heard this or have I been day dreaming again ;)

I would imagine there will be further expansions as well. Pretty sure more playable ships will be released as time goes on, possibly additional weapons and defence measures. There's also been talk of big game hunting which might not be part of the initial avatars update. You will end up getting better value out of the £80 tier that's for sure.

There will certainly, many small improvements, with regular extensions. Planetary landings and walk around the ship are major important extensions. For 80 £ you also have all previous rewards (game box too)

Well you've answered your own question then. We don't have any more concrete information than you.

FD have said though that they thought the £80 free expansions tier was grossly under-priced though, and that it should probably have been closer to (i think it was) £150.

Since the first expansion is probably the best part of a year away, why on earth do you think FD will be able to give you the retail cost.

It rather depends on how well the game does, and the amount of development effort required.

I think it depends on how much work that has gone into said expansion and how big it is. Right now I don't even think FD themselves know exactly what that will be in detail even if they might have a rough outline.

Also, I think that saying Expansion 1 (planets) and Expansion 2 (avatars) is somewhat oversimplifying it. There is almost unlimited potential of what could go into both planets and having the ability to walk around as an avatar, not counting space based expansions. There is probably going to be way more than 2 expansions (if financially viable) each one adding more and more depth and detail to the game world.

And don't forget some other non-controversial ones likes Crafting, Guilds, Asset owning and fleet management (3 of the 4 are still on the table so you never know :p)

I'm not convinced the OP was asking a genuine question.

Since Fromhell posted only yesterday that he/she thinks the main game won't be released until Christmas 2014, and that the first expansion won't see the light of day until possibly 2016, the cynic in me is starting to suspect some troll-like behaviour on their part.

they can´t seriously plan to cash in on every PATCH, and call it "Expansion"

In MMO terms an expansion is a huge and significant content addition

I assume this is not going to be a "pay per bugfix" monetization scheme?

Other companies need somewhere between 1-2 years for releasing actual "expansions"

Maybe "DLC" is a better term for what they are actually planning. And the pricing should be anywhere between 9,90 and 19,90

FD has already stated on several occasion that the smaller updates will be free and only major expansions will be payed for.

Thought so.

How much are expansions for most mmos? that should give you some idea. Also there will be several for ED. In essence as said all over this forum the digital £80 pack is going to be a big money saver for those who experience all the expansions.

Not much more to add, dont miss out!

what exactly is your problem...

I would say a misunderstanding.

How much are expansions for most mmos?
Using WoW as an example:
  • Main game:
    • Normal version around $30-50
    • Collectors edition around $100-150
  • Expansions around $10-20

So using 1:1 ratio (damn you beancounters!) I would say FromHells guess is fairly close to how I imagine they will be priced here in the UK.
