Expansions vs. items store

I don't really have any sort of question about this, and it's probably been gone over before, but i just wanted to float this out there to gauge opinions.

In the old days, a great game would come out, and if it was good enough and people wanted more, a huge expansion would follow with TONS of new stuff. Items, abilities, even new sub-games, etc.

Nowadays, there's a big trend towards "nickel and dime-ing", where small items, like guns, shields, upgrades, etc. are sold in a "game store" for real-world money.

To my mind at least, i don't have any problem at all with huge expansions, especially when they add new layers to a game. For example, planetary landings, player built space stations, outposts, maybe even other galaxies. Who knows, but each expansion would be suitably huge and self-contained for that new content.

I personally very much dislike real world money item stores, not least when you have to pay real world money all over again every time you upgrade to a new ship, or get blown up, etc. How about if certain types of ammo cost real world money? i just don't like the constant small fees over and over.

I think, even in the end if i'd spend slightly less on average for the game plus store purchases than i would for, say, the game plus 3 large expansions, i'd RATHER have the expansions and know that i have everything available to me, and could even come back to it in years to come without having to suddenly pay out just to keep up with what's going to shoot at me and never knowing or being able to control when i need to input more real-world money.

That's just what i think, how about what everyone else thinks?
