Expedition VII: Apollo 11 - Fly Me To The Moon

Mission Time: 21:12:07:56

Yesterday at 21:23:49 preheated thrusters of DEL-77 Rocinante burst with blue fire to begin the rotation. Detaching from Moon's gravity procedure was "Go!". Later on fairly easily the ship overcame Moon's influence and going around its horizon gained visibility of our home planet Earth.. 14.2 days on the HUD, does not seem like I am going to make it before my travel to Europe but worst case, we will finish this mission later in September.
The famous picture of Earth over the Moon's horizon taken by me yesterday is not even near the beauty of the original one.. but looks like the phase of the Moon was completely different comparing to original Apollo 11 mission. DEL-77 hovering over moon "moved" from the twilight zone into really the dark side. But it was such an amazing feeling to se the Earth rising on the horizon.

Server maintenance consumed some time of the mission but I already restarted this morning and incorporated the gap as I know it into the Mission Time counter..

On my way home

Yes, Rocinante is still flying and I was very busy this week.. well, part of it is that I am preparing my trip to Europe.. two weeks vacation.. I hardly can believe it myself seeing the mission counter. Deluvian's madness measured in hours.. yes, already last Monday I realized that my old record of insanity (600 hours of supercruise) got busted.. Now, it's been nearly a month and instead of finishing my mission, I will have to freeze it.. I am very much concerned that the Earth is just going to fly by me during the two weeks mission suspension time, so against all previous assumptions the freezing procedure is going to happen tonight. I just feel it is unsafe to move towards Mother Earth any closer..

I am back around 3-4 September and we will continue. I hope I will not be forced to chase the Earth because this is undoable .. My estimation was all wrong, but hopefully everything at least will be finished with "happy end"..

I think your position in space, and which bodies you "ride" along with, is based on gravitational spheres of influence, so once you leave the moon's grasp, you should be dragged along with Earth rather than left in a Solar-relative position. But I understand wanting to play it safe and hang out in the moon's SOI. ;)

Thank you.. that's what I thought, but as you said.. better safe than sorry

"Rocinante" has been flying again since last night.. It is my duty to complete this mission as designed. I am back after some nice vacation back in old Europe, more tired than before, but I have to admit it was intense.. Jet Lag is just killing me, so first short stream probably tonight.. need to get back into the routine.
Few more days to go.. actually 4.5 according to the game.. let's see

Almost home.. The Earth looks magnificent.. it still few more hours to go, so I will bring "Rocinante" as close as possible and stop for the final approach. It is going to happen tomorrow night and I hope we will have a chance for a proper "splash" (yet still virtual only) without a trouble of finding the best spot.
Total of what.. 3.2Ls in 35 days.. yeah, I know - nobody is as crazy as I am ;)
I still think that it was a very appropriate tribute to commanders: Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins o7

Tomorrow - the closure.. hope everything goes as planned

And it is done.. "I can see your house from here".. for some reason I use this phrase whenever I am back home from some very long mission.. [Pat Metheny & John Scofield reference]
Well, those who were with me tonight for the "splash" saw me struggling with my temporary controls.. But this was not the only problem. As I said, it is like learning how to walk again. After months of cruising with no controls I simply forget how to fly.. and then it all comes back eventually, but bringing DEL-77 Rocinante back home to Lee City at Jera system was a bit tricky..

35 days flying 1.6Ls to the Moon and another 1.6Ls on the way back to Earth. A new crazy record in Elite Dangerous universe? :)

The most importantly I want to say it again.. this is my tribute to Commanders: Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins
You did the truly unbelievable and inspired a lot of people with your courage.. without Apollo 11 mission there might have not been any space game.. David Braben would not have had a dream to build any of the Elite games.. and maybe we would still look up the night sky thinking that the Moon is just a big pumpkin pie in the sky

Apollo 11 crew.. o7

/me bows his head really deep
