Expedition VIII - The invitation

-yhq1o8.jpg

Woke up this morning still tired from Core mining. 24 hotspots and only got $2m... "man... I need a different Profession." i say out loud.

I move over to the docking area at the Orbital, I see a familiar face. I saw him on the Gal-net last year durring a high profile rescue. He was going for a record but i can't quite remember what record it was-

I turn my focus back on preflight. "crap i have 2 limpets left, and i need to refit the seismic launchers for this run... I'll go see where i am in queue"

As I step out, I come face to face with that man from Gal-Net, I about jump out of my skin, and take 3 step back and begin to apologise. "sor-" but he cuts me off. "My apologies Commander, I didn't mean to startle you." I sigh in relief and gather myself, I remembered his name and am now thoroughly awake " It's alright Commander Deluvian, how can I help you, I wouldn't think I would have caught the attention of a Legend?"
He looks concerned, and replies "Well you look like you need a change, if you are interested come to these coordinates, we leave in 5 hours"
i look at the piece of paper he hands me, the coordinates are just off the Orbital. "Where are yo- " he's disappeared
"well..." i ponder this situation a moment.
"huh, mining or a mystery? Not going to turn that Legend down."
I hop into my cockpit, preflight is done.
"let us see what comes next"
I fire up the engines and head out to the mystery coordinates...

As i get close to the coordinates I get a new contact alert. I check it and cannot believe what I am seeing. "These are a Myth!!!? Where did he get one of these!!!" In front of me is the largest ship I have ever seen, ''Zodiac'' , As i get close they welcome me to their space and remind me to request docking. As I request docking ''Manta'' screams that i have a new message. I check it, it's from Deluvian

"Welcome to the ''Zodiac'', Strap in and get ready"

I punch the throttle to my assigned pad. No time to even take in what i am seeing properly. As soon as I drop in the pad crew asks me if I have more than just ''Manta''. "Yes i have 5 total" He looks at me with fear and exhaustion, "Get them transfered now, we are preloading the engines for launch!"
Not going to argue with that guy...
"On it!"
Still in shock i take in everything, I am gonna have to watch this thing leave and catch up. I can't miss this Mythical beast rending space asunder....
I order transfers for my other ships, and purchase another hauler. "Just enough for insurance...not going to risk it..."
I head back to my cockpit, the shock setting in "where the F--- did he get a Fleet Carrier?!"

As i sit in my ship preparing everything for long jumps I can hear the engines starting to hum. The intercom buzzes above my head "Spooling FSD!" That's my cue! I hit the launch request button and move away quickly. "Attention! Carrier has entered preflight lockdown!" comes over the intercom. "By the skin of my teeth as usual..." I say to myself as i turn my ship around to get a good view. "It's to bad this dark planet is in the way, to late to change my mind now"

A few moments later i can see lighting emanating from the black, i watch intently but cannot see the hole. "D---it!" and just like that they were 500lys away.

"Well... time to catch up and try that again another day..." I set my route to an agreed upon rendezvous, charge my FSD and point into the void "Here we go, furthest I've ever been from home...here we go ''Manta'' " "4... 3... 2..." "goodbye home" "1... engage!" BOOM!

As we jump through the Abyss, i only get time to scan a system and land before the cooldown is over and we jump again. Going to go into stasis until we get to-... Zzzzzzz

My comms wake me up indistinct chatter it takes me a minute to wake up and process what i am hearing through the haze. "Get out here, you're gonna miss it Draco!" okay, I'm up, im up, i think to myself. I grab the location and prep for launch. I could use some coffee. I click on comms "be right there". it's gonna take me forever to get out there. "when is our departure?" I ask flight control. "No scheduled departure right now commander, safe travels." I smile, good and head out to the spot...

in the silence of the fsd i drink my coffee...

As i drop out I see the source of the excitement.
"Oh... My... God ..."
In front of me is a crystal, the largest I have ever seen. "I have to get a souvenir!" I say to myself.
But no matter how much i try or what tool i can't get a chunk off. "we'll bookmark this for later"
I head back to the ''Zodiac'' and prepare for the next system. "I'm awake now, better get some scans in." They'll be worth a bit that far out.

Now that I am awake, I am exploring systems at each jump to have a little extra cash once we arrive at Colonia.

At a particular Jump I notice Deluvian have a small issue on the launch pad, but he gets free pretty quickly, so i brush it off and continue preflight.

After scanning almost everything in the system i lock onto the ''Zodiac'' to return and prepare for the next jump, one small problem. I fall out of supercruise and immediately get an impact warning. The ''Zodiac'' is coming right for me seemingly with no regard for the fact i exist. "S---! UP, UPPPP!" I give the vector thrusters all they can take, a scaping sound like the ship rending right down the middle can be heard. I am 100% sure this is it. Then, silence, followed promptly by "Manta" telling me "Sheilds down". I wipe the sweat off ny brow and immediately contact Carrier flight control "You know its common courtesy to honk before you run somebody over?" They respond "sorry commander, we are having some slight problems with the engine, follow the coordinates we sent and land at this system.

After 15 minutes the carrier jumped into the system they had directed me to meet them at.
I was able to lock this time, but I knew Deluvian was still in the other system. "Please land at first available pad" I refuse "sorry flight, Deluvian is still in the previous system, I'm not landing until he does." Flight responds understandably "Affirmative, we are jumping back to attempt to pick him up, standby for jump." I didn't get a good look at the jump last time, being next to a star this should be good.

Fifteen minutes feels like a lifetime when you are waiting, the carrier finally jumps back, i promptly follow. A system wide comm immediately goes out; "DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LAND!" "uh-oh" i say under my breath. the zodiac is flying right past my ship at incredible speeds. "Well, time to ask Deluvian the plan, I'm not leaving him here" I click over comms "What's the plan" I ask, directly to the point. Its bad, no point beating around the bush about it. Deluvian sounds upset but is also direct; "You and the carrier jump out, I'll be leaving this ship in a pod and am getting scooped up, I will meet you there." I give an affirmation and follow the "Zodiac'' as it leaves the system.

I dock without issue and wait. I can see Ellentar returning and know they're back in one piece, so I head back to my ship and lay down on my bunk. "I'm just gonna stay put until Colonia."

We arrive at Colonia and the other start to get tritium to fuel the Zodiac. I cash in my data, gather as much Tritium as i can carry and get back to them cleaning up. All the work is already done. So i promptly take the Tritium back and start preparing for the jump of a lifetime.

After a week of work I finally have enough materials for a test of the systems i need we are delayed a day or 2 as Commander Ellentar needs to complete a task for a part he needs. So I have time for an adventure of my own.

A few modifications later and I finally have the range i need, by the skin of my teeth. 43 lightyear jump range, wish it was a little more. I choose to leave the galactic plane and see the Galaxy from above.

1 jump, 10, jumps, almost 100 jumps in solitude. Absolutely gorgeous views all the way to the top.
I chose a tiny lonely star, almost as far "up" as you can go. "Oh this is worth the 8 hours."

I turn my nose back toward the Galaxy and push Manta into the sea of stars, back home, to the Zodiac...
