Explain fsd

Can somebody explain(properly) how tf fsd works, because I didn’t seen any good explained answers to this kind of question. FSD is like the most unknown thing for me, I see 24ly jump range and 5 tons of fpj in ships specs, but when i go to the map, and try to build the route or just select the star system that i need and that is ~20ly away from me, then try to jump AND IT SAYS “woah, wait, 2 tons of fuel per jump exceeds your fsd’s amount” AND IM LIKE “WUHT TF IS THAT EVEN SUPPOSED TO MEAN??”

Btw i tried removing literally everything excluding fuel tanks of course, but this also made no good
 
Your FSD is rated for a specific length of jump: they show you unladen (no cargo/fuel) range, current range, and fully laden range. So, for example your ship may be capable of 22 LY unladen, 17 LY currently, and 12 LY fully laden. So, depending on how much cargo and fuel you have, the range of your ship will vary between those min and max numbers, but the current one always tells what your functional range right now is.

You typically get that message because you set your path on the galactic map before loading your ship. Now that your ship's range has changed, that path is no longer valid. Reopen the galmap and it'll automatically adjust your route for you.

So if you want to say, that three numbers separated by slashes is laden, current and unladen, then whatever, I’m telling you the left number, that as I understand “laden” and it is at least 20 at current time. Again, if I got your answer correctly

What I'm saying is the middle number is current range, so that's what matters give the state of your ship right now. So assuming nothing else changes, go to the galmap and plot your course, and assuming it can (meaning it can find hops equal to or less than your jump range as steps in your journey) it will give you a valid jump target. If you then pick up a cargo mission; buy items at the commodity exchange; even fuel up your empty ship...then you may need to reopen the galmap and it will automatically replot if needs be.

If you're just picking a star system while flying, the game will show nearby stars in your left nav panel. Not all of them are reachable, and that panel display will indicate as such. If you select an out-of-range star and attempt to engage the FSD, you will also see the message you described previously.

Assuming you are in a basic Sidewinder, your jump range is very small right now--probably in the range of 6-8 LY.
 
Could you please post a screenshot of your ship stats and core modules installed? There could be multiple explanation and we need to explain it right otherwise we could generate even more confusion.

If you just select the end system then you will get the problem. But if there's a route the short jump range shouldn't be a problem as there's likely to be a route through smaller jumps. But it's difficult as others have said to know what is actually happening.
 
so, i just got mindblown by mechs of this game, when i had cobra mk.III and A4 fsd installed on it, i tried to just select a system that is approximately 20ly away from me and engage to it(i had 20/23/25ly) it said "...exceeds 2 tons of fpj"(WHILE I HAD MAX OF 5 TONS). And now, im absolutely lost, go to galaxy map and choose fastest routes, and you know what, i jumped to 24ly... pepe frog
 
“Explain Fsd”?

I read that as “Explain Fed” and uh, I have my theories but to be honest I really don’t know why anyone would do that. I have a little Fed rank from flipping one of their permit systems, but really I’m at a loss. I wouldn’t do it, I would feel bad for any of my friends that did. I dunno, I really can’t explain them, don’t get the appeal, don’t like the lore, their ships look as brutal and ugly as their souls. Yeah, nup- not a clue.
