Exploration - a finite activity?

They intend to expand the exploration system beyond just finding new systems and seeing what kinda planets and stars they have. Or at least they talk about it.

Once again ... please forget about DDF.
This was only meant to be a discussion of how WE see some topics regarding to the game.
It does not mean anything to FD regarding actual implementation ... at least not to the extend a lot of people thought it would.

They certainly did not communicate that in any way. The forum posts are made in a way to make it look as if that is what the game will be, eventually. Regardless of intent, what was mentioned in the DDF Is what should be expected from a "space sim" in this day and age. For the sake of the game, I hope they don't think anything less is acceptable.

Unless they nerf the advanced scanner by a lot it'll take a lot less than 30 minutes to scan a system on average. More like 30 seconds.

That's a basic scan and referred to as shotgun scanning. There's still more gold in those hills for those with more patience to scan each planet with a detailed surface scanner

It actually can be endless since it is online controled world you can add something any time. That is a great benefit of online universe.

For example, even if you have fully explored system now, at some point you add a surface scanner and can scan planets for some rare minerals, then you add scanning for artifacts...
...and then FD announces that there was a new artifacts from a hightech vanished race discovered, the artifact indicates that there are hidden ruins of that race scattered all over the galaxy and in order to find those ruins you need a special upgrade for your scanners. Then you go down to the surface and explore ruins on foot.
Endless and if properly executed might be a lot of fun for explorers and others.

...then you will find our Engineers and then they kill all Humans.Game Over.

When you scan an unknown system, you simply find a number of unknowns. Planets, moons, stars or ring clusters.
.
You then have to fly close to get a proper scan and analysis.
.
If you simply scan then go back to sell the data, you may get a few hundred credits.
After scanning an unknown system with a metallic rind system, and analysing the clusters, I sold that data for 20,000 credits. :D

Some good money in exploration, I'd say it accounts for about 25% of my earnings so far. The best I've managed for one system is about 9k but I'll hopefully top that soon :)
I'll keep an eye on the numbers and see how that goes.

Technically finite if you're a vampire

Probably only Space engine has a bigger game engine and that's not really a game

I am confused too. So if I find something new in Solo or Online, am I discovering it for the universe or just for myself? Will it be logged that Cmdr XXXXX discovered this object? And thats it, discovered once.

Please cite an official statement saying something like "forget about dda". I don't think you can find one. If Frontier said something like that, A LOT of backers would demand a refund. And 9 out of 10 potential buyers wouldn't buy the game just based on what's in the Gamma. Everyone's waiting for the game envisioned in the DDAs. Some are hopeful, some are sceptical, some are delusional and believe they will get everything they ever dreamed about and then some, others are bashing anything even if works already. However, if Frontier really tries to forget about the Design Archives, almost everyone will be in agreement and this game will lose players faster than it can get new ones onboard.

Right. They clearly keep the DDAs and the hope alive. Only time will tell if they can actually pull it off and implement those features or if it will feel like a ruse in the end.

I did not refer to any official statement made by ED and of course there wasn't one.
But i only wanted to emphasize that perhaps most people were too focused on the DDFs content and now will be disappointed if lot of DDF related things will not be in the game in the release version.
