Exploration and playing with friends - partially mutually exclusive?

So, I would like to head out on a carefully plotted, fully evaluated and considered course for a lengthy exploration mission - second star to the right and straight on till morning.

But, I also love to hang out with various groups, friends and go shoot hell out of things, or trade, etc.

The trouble is once I get more than a couple of hundred LY's away from where everyone else is at its impossible to take part in anything but what I can find where I am at. Now don't get me wrong, I know thats the choice but I am wondering if its a choice that realistically FD should require someone to make.

I've seen quite a few threads and suggestions on moving one of a comanders multiple ships around so they dont need to fly back and swap over, I think something like that makes some sense. I remember reading about the notion of being able to 'log in' to a ship location, which I think met with the expected polarised views. Multiple commanders is known (I think) to be something that might happen but its way down the line before its going to get seriously considered.

So, right now, go off and explore and be alone (thats fine) but have no option to 'play the game' with anyone else who has not happened to be coincidentally on the same route.

So I think, for me, being able to log in to my different ship locations would solve 'my' problem.

Clearly it cant be just as simple as that or people could easily 'exploit' it, but some limited ability, possibly two registered ships per game mode. So in OPEN I would have the ability to start at up to two of my twenty ship locations, these two would be registered and that registration would have a significant cooldown before it could be changed (a day), in SOLO I would have two, they could be the same, they could be different. And in GROUP likewise. It might be that in OPEN you only have one so you cant jump about, in GROUP you get two and in SOLO you get three. Anyway you get the idea?

I really want to go explore but cutting off the rest of the game play I enjoy means I probably won't.
