Exploration Burnout

I think I am in real danger of exploration burnout. I started off with the Bucky run to Sag A. Beginning on the 2nd of June. As of today I am still 19,000LY away from Sol. I want to get home, but I am really starting to get fed up with jump, honk, scoop, jump, honk, scoop. Even the Neutron fields have lost their sparkle.

I have even started to play other games. And that's a big thing as I have not played anything else since December :-(

Damn you exploration why you do this to me? And the worst part of it all is that once I do get back home in a couple of weeks I will be itching to get out again and go explore some more

Funny!! I'm in a similar situation just had to cut short my exploration and rushing back home as my Dear Eleu is on fire!

Well, I had travelled 50k ly by the time I started my rush back from Sadge...also, on my day 99 as I left on April 12th... Just passed the 9k mark and getting closer...just tonight I could do 3k ly in a row...something I haven't done in months!

Come on CMDR! Fire up that FSD!! We can make it home in no time!! Cheer up and let's do this!

Space loneliness or madness kicking in guys! You need a Cobra or two seater to bring a friend!

That was the good thing a few versions back where you would usually get a NPC turn up in most systems and interdict you. Made no sense at all so far out but broke up the monotony.

Yes I would also suggest mining and prospecting, as currently doing this myself.
Nice to stop in a system for a while and do some good for myself.

Will be posting results soon, with some interesting questions and findings

Maybe the problem is that travelling itself is too easy/dull/safe in your ship? Why not change your build and technique to make it more exciting and involving on your next trip? I finally just made a perfectly balanced ship that can jump 35.2LY, has a smallish 20T fuel tank, and runs just hot enough that even normal stars can cook me if I am not careful. It also has just enough speed and defense in normal space to be a viable escape pod in Open, so it's quite a fun ship to fly. It feels like each jump is something of a dog fight just to escape fast deep scoop unscorched and unscathed. This is particularly true if I am using my acrobatic dive technique to jump 1000KLY in 22min. The ship makes the Galaxy seem smaller and yet somehow slightly more dangerous and interesting.

If your ship or your fuel scooping technique is too safe, it's easy to get bored and wonder why you are out there. If the only challenge is the massive distance, and your ship is too slow and your biggest danger is falling asleep from boredom, then it might be time to spice things up a bit.

Happened to me too. I really feel this is the only game capable of making you feel REALLY lost in space.
Nothing will ever match this game's size. :)

And that's both good and terrifying.
Getting the itch to start off the big unknown too, now.

*look out of the window at the sunny sky*

OP,

The same happened to me and the furthest I got out was around 20k.

My final number of days out was 73, I was itching to get back in to populated space and my return run was a case of jump, honk, jump with the odd scan involved. I did plot my return by manually selecting neutron's and dwarf's for as long as they were visible, then I just broke it up into 500ly jumps and went.

It's very easy to over look that whilst heading off out, whilst you're still fresh and keen to explore, at some stage you need to return and that can take just as long as your out bound trip.

For my next voyage I'll try and plan it more so I end up making a circuit with way points/places of interest along the way, including the return leg and possibly a smaller loop.

Stick with it, it's worth it in the end.

Good Luck & Fly Safe

Very nearly made a similar thread the other day. Curently mootching about bounty hunting and upgrading the python, but it can get dull, even with a few "take my tat there" missions thrown in. Part of me really wants to jump back in the asp and go searching again, but I duno what Im searching for anymore. Part of me want to take the python off to the peach, but meh so so so many jumps per 1k and why put myself through that for nothing, did some exploring with it around and just past the pipe bowl etc but found its mostly dead suns, or m class suns with lumps of ice orbiting them, bleh.
So yer, another explorer here thats not really sure what to do with himself, or really why he's doing it.

I'm in a similar position 20,000LY from Sol on my way back from Sag A* (sorry Kancro I didn't manage to get online over the weekend, so I couldn't help out Eleu at all! :().

I didn't even bring a detailed surface scanner this time as I wanted to deliver a present to someone at Sag A*, but didn't want to reduce my jump range!

Anyway this is my third return trip from the Buckyball Run A* and I can definitely confirm that the return journey from an expedition is harder than the trip out. I add as many fellow Buckyball Runners (and long-range explorers) as I can to my friends list (sorry if I missed you, I tend to add anyone who's making the run when I'm online). I send a good luck message to anyone who I see making the run. This has led to quite a few nice comms chats and also means that my map of the galaxy is dotted with green pilot symbols, rather than them all being in the bubble except me!

This helps make the galaxy seem a little smaller, and when I see someone like Marlon Blake or Barefoot Bandit right out on the edge of the galaxy, I feel a lot closer to the bubble. :)

Also you're quite right, once you get back you'll quickly hate the bubble with all the trade grinding and powerplay and CGs. You'll be back in the Big Black before you know it.

I'm feeling the same today.

I've been out since 1 April doing a Sag A trip. I went a bit space crazy end of May. It passed, only to return today. Luckily I'm almost home. Under 1 kLy to go.

I found it helped to set intermediate goals about 1 kLy apart. Like "I'll go to that nebula over there, and see if there are any Earth-likes to make nice pictures" or "oh, look, a super giant! Haven't seen one of those in a while, better go and have a look" That way each evening had an interesting purpose.

...and this exactly why we need more things to discover. I don't care what it/they might be, but please FD give us more reasons to head out into the Galaxy.

Some good advice there. The routine that seems to work best for me that is somewhat enjoyable is to circle a star while scooping (turning to keep it above my ship and using its corona to guide my ship) and fog horn blasting, then letting my ship go out and forward after filling up while I check the system map for anything that looks interesting or profitable before jumping to the next system. I also listen to a variety of music in the background, usually something different from YouTube. Lately it's been "psybient" type stuff. I turn off orbital lines too as I don't like them mucking up my view and they seem kind of cheaty to me.

The main risk of nodding off for me comes more from playing longer than I likely should and staying up too late.

Probablly I'm a victim of the grinding too. For now I'm halfaway to Sag A, but it's a week or so that the simple idea of logging in and making another jump sunds fun as office work.

The worst signal was in the last session, I found an unclaimed ELW and was sorry and deluded becouse I HAD TO supercruise 900ls to scan it.

I still keep a sparkle of interest, but my best bet is to take a super-long pause and hope in future content and game mechanics upgrades. If i completly burn myself out it's an unistall and never look back, so for me it's better leave with a sparkle of interest left.
