We have vessels intended for combat, intended for hauling cargo for trading, so how about an exploration class vessel for people who enjoy that role? I'm thinking something pretty big, like the explorer class from babylon-5 with a huge jump range so I can travel to the rim 
My thinking is that the main advantage of such a vessel is that it would come with a large number of internal fuel tanks, not sure how you would modify load outs or refuel if it's not dockable though ...
