Exploration - cool places to visit

It sounds like the final game will have an awful lot of "real world" astronomy detail in it (400 billion stars and all that).

I was wondering then if there were any astronomy gurus out there that could suggest generally cool places and phenomena to visit once Frontier releases the commanders from the existing Beta Quarantine zone, unique star systems, exo planets, nebulas, pulsars etc?

Good post I was going to start investigating online, but some pointers would be awesome. Assuming Frontier don't make any distant events "time correct" as in they must have happened back when the light from the event was sent.. or it would be more like pot luck getting to see anything we know is there from current observation!

The Pistol Star.
Or the super fast pulsar in a cluster in Sagittarius.
Personally I'll be off to see the Orion Nebula.

Hmm navigating a system with hypergiant could be problematic with the effects of gravity on supercruise. I think we would be talking orders of magnitude in terms of greater distances than a Sol type system?

Also, I wonder if we should need special shielding to survive if we end up at the wrong place near a pulsar? Assuming not everywhere near a pulsar is bad for your health.

I am really looking forward to touring our solar system.

I can't wait to scoot around the Solar System in Super cruise.

It'd be nice as well to be the first to watch C beams glitter in the dark near the Tanhauser gate.

Some interesting suggestions so far. Does anyone know of some good online resources to research my sight seeing itinerary?

Also do we know where the challenges will lie in exploration, beyond extra focus on fuel efficiency, and the obsessive appetite for solitary monotony involved spending the weeks on end locked in my ED den, hyperspace/fuel scoop, hyperspace/fuel scoop on repeat, till the night sky glows bright with the dense star clusters of the galactic core?

I feel such an effort would require the growth of a beard and the imbibing of ones own aqua vitae.

Since the game is set 1000 years into the future then it might be fun to see if the pillars of creation at the Eagle nebula have be destroyed as some people think they have. At over 7000 light years away though I might take a while to get there ;)

I'll be checking out the Horseshoe nebula, to see if it lives up to its name in the elite universe.

Get to the SMBH in the middle of Milky Way, enter the wormhole, end up in Andromeda.

Home of the Prypiatosian-B..good luck commander. :D

So this thread has had me trawling through the plethora of Wikipedia pages related to our solar system (again!) and the many weird and wonderful bodies it contains. And that's just one system, let alone all the other systems and galactic phenomena out there. After an hour and a half of reading I'm actually starting to worry a little that the galaxy in this game won't be busy enough! As the saying goes, "Space... it's really big," and our own system doesn't just comprise of a star, eight planets, and that's your lot. Obviously we are only in beta and viewing a very selective set of the content from the full game, but part of me would be quite happy just zipping around the Oort cloud in super cruise mode, or tracking the projected paths of the Voyager probes out of the system to see where they ended up.

Seriously, if that last one doesn't make it in as an easter egg an opportunity really will have been missed. :)

It'll be interesting to see how far above the galactic plane we can fly. If we can get a few thousand light-years above it then we are going to have a pretty spectacular view.

Of course, there's going to be problems traveling those kind of distances, especially when trying to find the best route possible between stars that are within our max jump-range, even with the best jump-drive available it's going to be a real challenge getting there, as these stars will become fewer and fewer, and farther apart the higher we go.

Making a 'road' map like this to sell would be very lucrative for any intrepid explorer, methinks. :)

I want to visit the Carina Nebula:

And there, go to see Eta Carinae:

The gates of Raxxla....

hmmm

I wonder if black holes will also be somehow featured last game I played that had them and were a nightmare was Star Trek Klingon Academy.... don't get too close :)
