Newcomer / Intro Exploration credit in well-travelled systems?

A little background:

I'm an old-school F:E2 player, who picked up E: D from Epic just before Christmas. I'm still getting used to it, especially the blessed addition of in-game rewards for trade and exploration as well as combat. (I suck at combat.) I certainly don't feel ready to take my newly-purchased Cobra MkIII out beyond the bubble to try some hardcore exploration yet. I currently play Solo - I'm hoping to join a persistent private group at some point.

But every now and then, I get a notification when I arrive in a system (or when I fly across a wide binary) telling me that I've discovered something in it. And sure enough, it's listed in my discoveries and I can sell the data at Universal Cartographics if I get more than 20ly from the system. Now I don't mind this at all - it's rather neat, and it's both free cash and free ranks in the Explorer ladder. But I am curious - it told me I'd discovered Teegarden's Star, and (1) I'm fairly sure Bonnard Teegarden did that (2) even if historical discoverers aren't credited, I'm sure that thousands of in-game commanders have passed that way before me, as it's right in the heart of the core.

So my questions are:

1) Does everyone get this? Is this working as designed? Does me playing Solo make a difference?

2) When I get told I've discovered something in a well-trafficked system, is it worth my while taking time to go and scan it close up with the DSS?

Thanks,

Sasha

  1. (a) Yes, (b) Yes, (c) No.
  2. Yes.
Cartographics will pay you for everything you find for the first time and selling that data adds it to your personal map database. If you are actually the first commander to sell data on that system/body then you will get a bonus payment and your commander name will be added to the discovery information in the various maps.

Just to make clear first discovery goes to the commander who first sells the data at cartographics just because commander a first found it doesn’t get his name on anything if commander b who found it months later actually sells the data first.

When the game says you "discovered" something that doesn't necessarily mean that nobody has discovered it before, only that it is new to you.

To find out if you are the first to discover a star or planet select it in the system map. It will either have a tag saying "First discovered by CMDR NotYou", or it won't.

Before the last update, the navigation panel and System Map would show planets and Suns as 'Unexplored'. This seems to have stopped. Is there any way to have the panel and/or System Map revert to showing things that have not been discovered/explored by you?

Nothing has changed - you just need to go to a place that 1) you have not been to before and 2) isn't one of the systems already in the database (population over some figure like 2Bn).

e.g. From just now in game:

Thanks. I have been revisiting old systems to land on planets to update TCE with the issue of Horizons (I was flying the basic version).

I was in a System that showed no Unexplored planets but I was getting these "Discovered" messages, like when you explore an "unexplored" planet by flying near it. Wondered if something had changed as I had not seen an unexplored planet for weeks.

Finally found some at Taso Wuhte!

As a further edit, I have started using the FSS scanner to discover all the unexplored planets and suns. I have been using TCE since shortly after I started and this has now been set to show systems that I have explored, rather than Visited, Scanned or Mapped.

Had set up my mouse to do FSS scanning but have moved back to using my Thrustmaster as I find it easier. But it is annoying to be bounced by nasties whilst in FSS mode - quick panic as I exit FSS, engage Combat Mode and correct Firegroup and set throttle to blue zone! My tip would be to set your shields to the correct settings before going into FSS mode.

Off to HIP 22550 later today to participate in the Community Goal.

Its like visiting a town and discovering there is a McDonalds on the main street. And for some strange reason someone (Google Maps?) pays you money for this information which has already been reported a thousand times. I agree it is a bit odd.

Spacetime is 4 dimensional so data from now is not necessarily the same as in the past. There can be value in comparing changes over time. If that hypothetical McDonalds were to burn down overnight a Google Maps update would be appreciated by somebody.

Ya, my McDonalds analogy maybe wasn't very good. A star's lifetime usually exceeds that of a typical fast-food restaurant. Planets don't often disappear. 🤷‍♂️

Multiple scans of an atmosphere and/or life bearing planet might be worth something though. And planets that have human activity happening on them. This would have assisted Darth Vader finding the rebel outpost in the Hoth system. (wrong galaxy? well ok.)
