Exploration: Distance out from where?

Just a quickie on distance and exploration.

When people say "I am exploring and am 2,000LY out", where do you normally calculate from? I would pick Sol as the central point or maybe the last known habitable system.

Thank you

I use my leaving system, so I am probably wrong :) should use SOL. But then I have a marker ship in that system ,so that it shows on the map easily !!!

p.s. once you're over 10000 LYs out it doesn't matter if you use SOL or another system, you are deep !!!!

Human civilization isn't widespread, just a couple of hundred LYs across, so it could be referred to as inhabited space in general, or SOL to be a more precise point of reference.

Since I tend to explore the lower half of the galactic disk, I use Facece as a benchmark. It's close to the bottom of the human sphere.

I keep track of my distance from my Home System of Cao Gong, but the difference between using that as a reference and from Sol is negligible.

Go to your map and turn on all the factions, and turn off un-aligned systems. Then zoom back and you'll see what human space looks like. You can also do that by setting population > 0 and it'll only show populated systems.

Usually when explorers say "I am 1000ly out" they mean that when they mouse over their home system (where they have all their ships parked) it says 1000ly. Human space is about 500ly across or thereabouts. There are a few outposts on the edge - a lot of explorers stop in at those outposts to fuel and repair before they run in to wherever they plan to turn in their discoveries.

Use any marker you like.
I think most use Sol as reference, probably because MOST of us come from Sol. ;)

I'm just under 1,000Ly out from Sol right now, by the time i finish will likely be around 2-3k out.. who knows.. for now though, i'd probably normally use my start system where i began my voyage from for my own purposes.

If you went towards the core, counter-clockwise, or the combination of the two, calculate towards Leesti. It´s pretty much on the edge of inhabited space, strangely enough.

I generally use Sol as a reference point for distance. Once you get pretty far out the difference between inhabited systems doesn't really mean much.
I'm currently 11K LY out heading core wards with a cracked canopy due to an encounter with a red dwarf. Wish me luck!

Whenever i used the "xxxx ly out" phrase, i referred to the distance from Sol, even though i've never been there.

The grid is based on the solar system, and that makes it the universal point of reference.

Might as well keep it simple, so everybody knows what ya talking about.

I always use both distance to Sagittarius A*, center of the Galaxy [25, -21, 25900] and distance to Sol, birth of human civilization [0,0,0].
I usually refer to going North as the direction Sagittarius A* is seen from Sol, which makes positive X coordinates East, negative X coordinates West.

I usually mean from Sol. It's the origin of the co-ordinate system (and us). This trip should tick over 8kly from Sol in a few more jumps.

Inhabited space is so tiny (600 ly across) compared to the whole milky way that is really does not matter after a few K ly, its like the 3rd digit of the distance

who cares there's nothing to shoot once you get 500 Ly out....damn now i need a reference point for the 500 Ly....

Damn weird explorers almost as bad as those traders... PEW PEW.... :)
