Exploration effects on naval rank progression?

As I buzz around the vincinity of the galactic core, I contemplate on to whom to sell my precious load of data, upon my return.
I am on good foot with all major factions, however I have not yet been granted the title of Earl by mandate of the Emperor (may he live long & prosper).

Will sharing my data with the Empire show that I am worthy of such a distinguished position within the navy?

It will certainly increase your rep with the Empire but if that alone is a sure fire way to trigger the next promotion mission I don't know

Selling your data at a station will significantly improve your major and minor faction rep. I went straight to Allied with the Empire after selling ~50M CR at an Empire outpost.
Rank progression missions seem to depend on both major and minor rep.

A "problem" I have had, has been that after selling my exploration data I ended up being Allied with the Empire and all the minor factions affiliated with it. This can have the curious effect of preventing you from getting more ascension mission. Many others have commented on that situation, as far as I can tell its a bug, and I am hoping it will be fixed in 1.3.

You can still earn rep with the minor factions.
I found that when I became "Friendly" with the Empire, all the minor factions moved up one step so the Neutral ones became friendly and the friendly ones became allied.
Same thing happened for the Allied level.
So it seems you rep with the major faction plus minor faction.
However the rep with the minor faction is recorded separately and moves up down separately we just cannot see what it is unless it is drastically different.

I haven't tried it but I assume if you were allied to a minor faction and became unfriendly with its major faction you would drop to Friendly.
If so what we need is a way to see our unmodified local rep, so we know we can work on improving it regardless of our over faction rep.

I think this is one of the reason why people think their promotion progress is stalled, they get allied with the Major faction, become "allied" everywhere and done realize they still can improve their Local faction reputation and earn progress towards getting offered the next promotion mission,

However if you are no longer getting any missions, that will be a bug

I will share the data among the various minor factions of wich I have not yet had dealings with, then
Thank you for your contributions!

If you're Allied with the Empire but, say, neutral with a minor faction then your apparent status will display as Allied with the minor faction. I guess Allied + Neutral = Allied, if you see what I mean.
You can see your underlying status with a minor faction if you do a mission for them. The bar in the mission results screen shows your real status.
It appears to me that you need both good major faction status and good underlying status with the controlling minor faction at a station to be offered rank progression missions.

Since I am far away from civilized space, perhaps you can tell me if examining a faction in the right-hand panel will tell you your standing?
I recall that there is a bar, but not wether it it indicate the faction's influence in the system or relations with you.

I sold 30mil in one go but it's not triggered an increase from Baron. Just 2-4 mil of data sold is enough to turn the local faction allied tho. Perhaps selling at multiple stations?

I hope the OP doesn't mind me hijacking the thread. I was looking for an answer to this question myself as I will soon be selling a fair chunk of data but I have a secondary question:

Does selling exploration data to a particular faction affect their standing within a system? I admit I have been fighting on the Federation's side in Lugh and am wondering if it would be of any help to the Federal cause to head to that system and sell the data to a relevant station?

I have been actively selling my data since returning from the core a few weeks ago. I had data from over 2800 system in total about 65mil worth. I decided to spread it around based on what I had read and once I reached allied with the local faction I moved on. I had basically no Empire faction before starting. I did see the first Naval Progression mission after I raised about 3 local factions to allied and completed it. It took several million worth of data for each faction, though I did not keep careful record. Since then I have raised another 10-12 local factions to allied and have not yet seen another Naval Progression mission. So, either it's bugged or exploration data does no count the way combat/trade/charity missions do.

I've just returned with (not sure yet how much) exploration data to sell, and am hoping to use this to get a rank progression mission from Lord -> Baron so I finally have the option of buying a Clipper.

I'm not 100% sure it's working though, as I'm Allied with the Empire, and so already Allied with all the minor Imperial factions too. I do find if I go to an Imperial system, sell ~4 pages of data, the little blue arrow appears indicating I've increased my reputation. Then I move on to the next faction and repeat until I see the 'rep up' arrow again. Thus far, I've sold about 10m, with no sign of a rank progression mission. Is this the best approach, or would it be better to sell all the data with one faction?
