Exploration/Fuel Ratting Ship Analysis

Fellow Explorers/Fuel Rats,
.
Based on Horizons 2.0.X and using ED Shipyards, I've assembled a list of all ships in a Googlesheets document. This information can be used for explorers as well. Just replace the fuel limpet controller with a Detailed Surface Scanner.
.
.
BOTTOM LINE: Top-5 ships for fuel ratting are: Asp Explorer, Anaconda, Asp Scout, Hauler, T-6.
.
.
ASSUMPTIONS
Through more testing of supercruise acceleration, it appears that maneuverability and total ship mass contribute to the equation. I can't tell the exact formula (nor does it really matter) but suffice it to say that these factors are included in the new charts. I tested this with different builds on Asp Explorers, Anacondas, Cobras, DiamondBack Scouts, Haulers, and Imp Couriers.
.
To be a good fuel ratting ship, I made the following assumptions:
1) Max jump range is king but also important to have low fuel scooping times and quick supercruising.
3) It is a good technique to be able to make 4 max range jumps without refueling.
4) For your own safety, carry no more than half your internal fuel in limpets (8t fuel, 4 limpets).
5) The maximum number of limpets a Fuel Rat needs is 8 (unless rescuing someone 3800Ly away with a broken fuel scoop).
6) A-rated power supplies are still preferred for fuel scooping.
.
In setting up these ship builds, I made these standardizations:
1) No weapons or shields, D rated life support and sensors, lightweight alloys, 1D power distro
2) Smallest D-class thrusters available
3) 1D fuel limpet controller
4) Max A-rated FSD
5) Smallest A-rated power supply that will power the ship
6) Advanced Scanner installed (Sidey, Eagles, ViperMk3, and DB Scout don't have room)
7) Cheapest fuel scoop to allow for ~30sec scooping or the best available if not near 30sec
8) No ship or module discounts were applied
.
RESULTS
Based on all of this, I've assigned a completely made-up factor ratings for each ship out of 100; 70 for max jump range, 20 for maneuverability, and 10 for fuel scooping time. Using fancy high school maths including (+), (-), and whatever this is (*), I rated each ship on suitability for the task.
.
The Top-5 ships are: Asp Explorer, Anaconda, Asp Scout, Hauler, T-6.

BUILDS AND RAW DATA
Found HERE. Take note of the colors in the raw data. While the Imperial Eagle could be used on a rescue, your capability to assist the client will be limited.
.
CONCLUSIONS
There are obviously as many variations as their are preferences. For example, I prefer to run A-rated power distribution to boost as fast as possible away from stations when the Rat Signal goes off. You may also want a more well rounded ship to be doing something else while waiting for a Ratsignal.
.
If you want to be different, please do! I've successfully rescues clients while flying almost every ship on the list so have fun trying things out.
.
This ship analysis is focused on getting to the client quickly, safely, and with maximum capability to assist. Above all, remember that the CLIENT COMES FIRST.

Nice post. There's a couple of other things to mention perhaps.

1) fuel ratting is not necessarily a full time job so you might want to go with a bit more of an all rounder (i.e. so you can be doing other stuff while waiting for the ratsignal to light up). I don't personally think there's always enough time to jump back into your dedicated rat ship for example. Personally I'm flying a Python (OK, not everyone has reached those cash levels yet) because it's a damn good combat ship that can carry upwards of 150t of cargo and still get me to most core rescues in around 5 jumps).

2) and I almost hate to raise this side of fuel ratting but ... quite often there are several rats available, and we all want to get a few rescues in, so errr, let's just say being first on the scene can be rewarding as there's not always time to debate who's turn it is ... Hence (I assume) the reasoning behind speed/range (just in case people were wondering)

I don't want to be the negative grump, but I need to raise a point: the client comes first.

I was on #FuelRats last night and there were a couple rescues that seemed like a complete, uncoordinated mess. Some CMDRs were super-eager to get in there and get a rescue, to the point where they stopped communicating effectively and appeared to be trying to cut other rats out of the loop. That kind of behavior puts clients at risk, especially in CASE RED situations.

If there's someone acting as DISPATCH, please don't immediately bombard the client with friend requests in order to get a jump ahead of the other rats. In fact, you should never do that unless you're the only rat on duty: this is a cooperative effort. You have to put yourself in the position of the CMDR who has run out of fuel: often they are new to the game, confused, unfamiliar with friend and wing mechanics, and stressed out. Having a bunch of people all start bombarding them with friend requests and yelling contradictory directions increases the chance that the CMDR will lose "focus lock" and make a mistake. I have seen several rescues nearly go into the weeds because of this, when the rescuee was so wrapped up dealing with incoming fuel rats scrambling that they didn't mention they were on emergency life support until it was nearly too late.

We need to level up our game, Rats. We need to be more professional and cool, calm, and collected. For those of you who have read "The Right Stuff", hearken back to the part where Tom Wolfe describes John Glenn's "test pilot" voice and how entire generations of pilots have adopted that "I'm in command, it's all OK, don't worry" tone. That's more or less the exact opposite of the kind of rugby pile-ons I've seen happen in #FuelRats lately, and I think we (collectively) need to be a little more understanding of the clients' situation, and (individually) a bit less selfish. In the Fuel Rats we have invented the most positive form of cooperative play to happen in the Elite universe. We should hold our tails high and impress our clients with our organization and teamwork not with our individual speed or personal score on the leaderboard.

Occurs to me I should probably share my own build: http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=70g,0Wg,2-3I8S7_6Q5K8S8I,52C08c0KU0Ko5fa2jw2UI

This Asp is outfitted for long-range exploration and ratting. It's expensive, unshielded, and I do not at all recommend it for use in the bubble. But out in deep space, it has an outstanding jump range even when carrying 16 limpets, and with a 6B scoop it can fully top off your tank without slowing down while reorienting towards your next jump.

There have been so many requests for explorer builds lately that I thought I'd repost this. I've added the new 1.4 ships that we know about so far.
.
If anyone has done more testing regarding super cruise acceleration times (such as if Maneuverability is more important than Mass), please let me know and I'll update the raw data.

Nice to see the Asp Scout in there.

My opinion is that it will be (once/if they fix the Boost 'bug') one of the best Bubble-Ratters in game.

Nice post Domaq o7

At this point Surly's post looks a little like it was intended for the other thread. Anyway I'm pretty sure I convinced almost everyone to fit the A1 fuel scoop for limpet range while still being lightweight.
