Newcomer / Intro Exploration - How do you know where you've already been

Only my second day with exploration, but I already know I'm missing a history of systems I've been through before. Maybe because I'm still a newbie, but I can't for the life of me remember (short of actually writing them down on paper - or Notepad) where I've been.

How do experienced explorers remember or keep count of the places they've visited before?

I never really care where I have been. I tend to head to a location, stopping only occassionally to scan. Maybe scan a few systems around my destination, then head off to somewhere else. I never try and 'complete' an area

Feldspar, I thought of that too, but what I'm confused about is that for some systems the system map is available even when I've never been there before. I've just been to a completely new place, a system called Toci, and system map is available.

So I guess my second question is what makes some systems have the SM available even though I've never visited/scanned them before?

Pen & paper for en-route waypoints, destinations and systems I discovered. In unexplored territory, the availability of the system map is a good indicator, as Feldspar said.

In the populated areas, I mostly don't care and scan when I stumble upon a previously unscanned system.

Edit: You know some systems by default, so to speak. I think it's only ever populated systems, though, or at least named ones.

There's billions of them. To me it doesn't matter. I just pick a point 1000LY at random and head in that direction. Once I get there I zoom out, pick a point 1000LY at random in the same direction so I am moving away from populated space and continue my journey.

When I explore again on a new trip I do the same but pick a different direction.

That's kindof how I manage it...

Ah, you're talking about exploring in the occupied area. Most high population systems come ready-scanned, the system information is well-known and readily available. I've been to Toci, avoid the cheeseburgers, it's not actually cheese.

Lol. Yes I'm in a Sidewinder so I can't go much out (and not that brave like that Ranger Zero guy - kudos to him). so for now i"m around the occupied / semi-occupied area. Sometimes I have a deja-vu feeling that "I've been here before. Darn.".
