Exploration: Level 2 and Level 3 Detailed Scans

I want to ask a question that has been asked before. It has probably been answered before, but heyho.

have a good grasp of the basics of exploration now, and know how to use discovery scanners and detailed surface scanners.

Looking at my pilot stats on the right panel, the Exploration section describes Level 2 Detailed Scans and Level 3 Detailed Scans. However, using a detailed surface scanner does not seem to add to these counts. Does this mean there are additional types of scanners available? Do planets need re-scanning further? Closer? Slower?

They're simply not implemented yet. It's speculated to be a part of the planetary landings expansion and to include level 2 atmospheric scans and level 3 surface sample scans for example. Exploration needs loving, and eventually it will.

Hopefully its not part of planetary landings. Thats DLC we have to pay for - this should be core content imho :-/

Planetary landings also seems like a HUGE amount of work compared to just about any form of scanning.

Yeah, my guess is that one is a very close pass, perhaps with some sort of atmosphere sampling, and the level 3 is a landing with surface sampling.

In the meantime I am keeping track of the water worlds, terraforms and earth-likes I've found (well, all two of the latter), so I can go back.
