Exploration of Planets

Just a couple of questions guys.

First one is, when is Horizons coming out ? Holidays 2015 tells me nothing. Is that Xmas holidays ? what holidays is Elite talking about ? I come from the land downunder and please, no pun intended :D.

Second one is, is this going to cost an arm or/and a leg to get going. I mean I just finished my first ever 11k exploration and raced back (12 straight hours of planet jumping) to see if two weeks of exploration was worth it. it was :) 1800+ scanned systems, 11 mil. gotta be happy with that I suppose. Next run will depend on these " Holidays " and when they start.

Do I need to start putting as much away as i can to get the gear to land on planets. Obviously it' going to be some sort of module you buy to be able to do it. Is it going to be a case of slogging away for six months to be able to purchase the ability and be another one of those dreams Commanders have about flying their own Anaconda but just never seem to get there fast enough ? Or will it be something reasonable that even a newbie just starting to play could be expected to buy within a reasonable time frame.

And lastly, do I have the time to go out into the black again and do a healthy run for a few weeks or more before these " Holidays " get here ?

Might sound like mundane questions guys but I always taught my men the most stupidest question is the one that's not asked.

Cheers Big Ears.

I'm pretty sure that "Holidays 2015" really means just before Xmas 2015. So you should have plenty of time to do a fast exploration run. :)

It's a good question about cost of the buggy thingamajig thing. I wonder how much they are going to cost?

Yeah what you said. Only scanned the most interesting of planets. I did scan the main star. Was the first trip tho. next one will be different. only thing not getting scanned is ice. I'll defiantly take my time next run and do a more thorough job.

I doubt the barrier to entry will be very high, although there is very little evidence to support this, so let's call it an assumption? First, last I heard FDev is planning on having an assortment of dune buggies available in different sizes and for different purposes. Also, landing on planets is The Thing The Expansion Is About, so making it so we have a hard time even getting to try it wouldn't make a lot of sense. There were also some FDev comments that implied that bigger ships would be more difficult to handle planetside.

So my expectation is that you will be able to bring a sidewinder and the smallest dune buggie down to a planet pretty cheaply, but if you want to bring you biggest and baddest ship down and then tool around on the planet in a super dune buggie decked out for WAR then you're going to have to break the bank.

But yeah, just guesses and assumptions.

They daftly used the American term and the "politically correct" English one. They meant between thanksgiving and New Year. Basically yeah around Xmas sometime.

Dev comments were that new(ish) players should be able to do planet landing. It's not very credit restrictive.
I expect actually landing can be done with any ship with no extra cost. The buggy I'd place somewhere at around 50,000 maybe more, maybe less.

Reasoning for my guess:
-50k isn't a lot but still significant for newer players.
-There will be more buggies to come, probably bigger and badder ones costing more :)
-Any less than about 50k and it is a joke for players with 800 million credit ships.
-Any more than 50k and it's restrictive but 1/6th of a price of a Cobra doesn't seem too bad to me.

The module I have honestly no idea, there may be variants determining how far away from your ship you can drive or something, I've got no idea on that :p It'd be cool if the A grade allowed you to summon your ship to pick you up so you didn't have to drive back to it...

Finally you have more than enough time for a trip unless you are planning a several month voyage. There is 1.4 (CQC) and the 1.5 (Ships) update coming before Horizons so get going :p
Even the other side of the universe can be reached within a long weekend so even if they surprise us you should be able to race back home fairly quickly :)

Cheers and thanks to all that answered my post. I'm now with it :) and I have already left on my next adventure and I may be gone for awile on this one. Why ? because I can :)

Cheers Big Ears
