i have tracked 107 exploration passenger missions >1000 ly in various systems, economies and states to answer myself the question, which cabin to fit.
first of all: if you are looking to pick up a mission (or more than one), fill your internals with cabins, don't forget 4T of cargo (so you have the cargo requirements), and have your fuelscoop, scanner, srv bay etc. transferred to the station after picking up your mission(s).
of course you want to save weight as much as possible, e.g. you want to have the smallest cabin suffice .... but you can't change cabins after picking up a mission.
here are the numbers:
Which cabin can play which % of missions?
Class 4 First Class: 24%
Class 4 Business Class: 57%
Class 5 First Class: 83%
Class 5 Businness Class: 72%
Class 6 First Class: 100%
the numbers of missions for class 3 slots (businness 3, economy 4) are around 7% - bad news for courier-explorers.
if you just want to run 1 mission (e.g. no redundance for stacking), that translates for the process of picking up for some typical exploration ships :
AspE: Class 6 First Class, Class 5 First Class
t6: Class 5 First Class, Class 5 Businness Class, Class 4 Businness Class, Class 4 First Class
DBE: Class 4 Businness Class, Class 4 First Class
Anaconda: all cabins above.
