Exploration payout needs to be adjusted

tell me what is your risk in other professions?

Exploring is comparatively low risk to the other professions. Why should i get a massive payout just because i spend hours scaning a load of ice planets far from inhabited space?

Also not everything about this game should just be about earning loads of credits. Far too many people seem obsessed about that. You don't need an Anaconda and a billion credits to enjoy this game. I don't get why so many see that as their goal!

The general exploration payouts are reasonably good, the trouble is the completely broken rarity value mechanic, and the ability to farm currently "rare" objects.

Basically, Earth-likes, and to a degree terraformable worlds, are quite rare and essentially completely unpredictable*, yet they are only worth a trivial amount more than ridiculously farmable neutron stars and black holes. (for those that don't know, you can set you galaxy map to only show neutron stars and black holes, and near the core there are literally millions of them)

Earth-like planets need a colossal boost in value due to their obscene rarity compared to any other object, and even rare star-types need to be boosted a bit (hyper-giants, etc), but those would be farmable to a degree

*Yes, some will argue that some star classes are more likely to have Earth-likes, but that's an essentially meaningless factor when it's still a complete crap-shoot if you'll find one or not when you arrive.
 
Quite a good point - I could see even 1 million Cr first finder's pay-out for earth likes and ammonia worlds not breaking the game in the slightest (obviously now we have a thread with a list of earth-likes the second visitor should get an amount closer to the current value)
 
Shipping Tycoons are Rich.
Explorers are Poor (relatively speaking).

Not all gains are financial.

In my opinion they should tweak everything else to bring it down to the same level.

If you stop thinking about it in terms of credits per hour, it becomes a lot more fun.

You do understand you directly contradict yourself in these two sentences, yes?

Not every job pays the same in real life, even under the harshest communist rule. If Frontier put everything else aside and spent five thousand person hours bringing all occupations within a credit of each other in earning potential, the majority would still say:

Trading - Boring, don't want to do it.

Exploration - Boring, don't want to do it.

Mining - Boring, don't want to do it.

Missions - Boring, don't want to do it.
 
Personally I'm starting to think that Exploration actually pays a little too much. I mean, let's face it, other than the odd contact binary (VERY RARE) and psycho at Sag A* (VERY VERY RARE) there is like zero risk in exploration. I'm on my 4th Exploration trip, and each of the previous trips (with the exception of the first one) I came back and made enough to purchase a new nearly a-spec ship (Cobra>Asp>Vulture).

But then, I'm not counting hours, either. So I honestly don't know how many hours I've spent exploring. All I know is I explore until I'm ready to do something else, and when I come back in after that I have a fat stack of cash.

Contact Binaries very rare? HA!
Ive only been on my current exploration run for a few days and have seen at least 10 and one of those was a black hole almost touching the primary.. come at these from the wrong direction and BAM! all that time wasted unless your real lucky.
 
Strange. In my 50KLY+ exploring career, I've only ever seen one. I do mostly go out, rather than in, if that makes a difference.

1... Its exceptionally rare to hyperspace in along a vector that will bring you out too close to one of the stars. In my case it occurs about 1 in every 4,000 jumps.

2... The damage they do is tiny if you immediately drop out of supercruise and turn off your fuel scoop.

3... The damage they do is negligible to non-existent if you follow point 2 and fire off a heat sink before re-engaging the FSD.


The risk of contact binaries has become a bit of folklore in the last 7 months. Yes they were considered an explorers worst nightmare in the first few weeks/months of the game since we were still learning to deal with them back then. Now we know the odds of getting wedged in the inferno is miniscule, and we know how to negate the damage they do (heat sink is an explorers best friend - but were bugged in the early days of ED so not many of us used to fit them until after patch 1.1.) You can also check the map and gauge how close two stars are and your orientation to them, and then decide whether or not you want to risk a 1 in 4,000 chance of getting a charcoal paintjob..

One of the the problems with exploration in elite is there are very few environmental dangers out there. Its supposed to be a dangerous galaxy full of unknowns and hazards. Close orbiting binaries are currently as bad a it gets.

I don't know if there is an actual in-game explanation, but the logical one is simple.
Fuel Scoop active = opening into your ship. Close the opening, reduce the heat build-up going on, take a lot less heat damage trying to jump out again.
 
What does turning off your scoop do, other than reduce your power usage fractionally?

It reduces the heat buildup when you begin supercruising away from the stars.

Quite a while back I made a quick video on how to deal with binaries.

At the time I was out there without a heat sink, so was unable to add that to the video (I mentioned it in the vid). I've been actively trying to get wedged between two stars again when I'm out there just so I can make a better video, but this one gives you the basics of what to do.
