Exploration + Planet Landing + Walking outside of ship = Hunting!

Please tell me that's already in the works.

Imagine: you found the planet with life 2543534534 light years from Sol, went down to the surface, took out a rifle and went out to get some specimen using some shooter mechanics. Then you go back to populated system and sell all pieces for loads of credits for either scientific needs or some rich guy's wall!

Bonus points for dying from strange bacteria you brought to the ship.

Extra bonus points for bringing some alien plague to inhabited system!

Super bonus points for being told that you actually killed a sentient being and ending your life in alcoholic depression in the nearest bar.

Won't it be fun?

I believe that getting out of your ship and going for some alien game hunting is an activity that David Braben publicly visualised himself a few times, so it's very likely that this specific feature will be implemented at some point in the future.

That's the best answer i could hope for. Thanks!

Bear in mind it's rather distant future and not 100% guaranteed :) But it seems that Mr. DBOBE is keen on it, so maybe...

Oh, i'm alright with waiting. If i can wait for Infinity to come out eventually, waiting for hunting in E:D will be like a blink of an eye.

Imagine discovering new seedling of grain on a planet in furthest, unknown system. Harvesting tons of it to your cargo. Selling it in SOL on the black market for a good price. Taking few weeks off because the deal was so good. Weeks later many people are dying because of strange stomach disease. Months later population in SOL reaches few hundred. Quarantine is real. Now you can not get out of the system praying for scientist to invent a cure ... this game has to be great! ;)

Google any hunter simulator and see how bad an idea this is. Why would I be shooting little green elk when I could be shooting pirates?

Imagine landing on a far away alien-infested planet. Hunting for a while, returning to the landing site and… no more ship, stolen by the aliens getting to Sol!

To each their own my friend.

Why would I be shooting pirates, when I could be shooting little green elks?

"Fun" is a very subjective term and your definition of it may be (and probably is) completely different to mine. That doesn't make any of them wrong however. You should not criticise something, just because you don't like it from your own, subjective point of view.

Because why are you thinking it's mutually exclusive?

It's not mutually exclusive. And if lots of people want this then who am I to stand in the way.
My issue is if they did decide to do this it will take their time and resources away from adding features that I think would improve the game. Like more missions, more ships, Aliens, ability to fly in groups, missions or quests you can only do in groups. etc.
Some people already say this space trade/exploration combat game is empty and boring. I don't, i enjoy it but a hunting simulator mini game for an expansion. Really? I can't imagine a majority of players rally want to do this. Mining is already dull enough.

The planetary landings are planned as a expansion pack. I'm pretty sure they will focus on developing the main game module before that.

And I am pretty sure, criticizing something you don't like from your own, subjective point of view, is exactly what everyone does on these forums and exactly what everybody does everywhere else too. My opinion is invalid because it is an opinion?

Opinions usually have no value to begin with. Only arguments do, and sometimes facts.

Anyway, you are basically saying that this idea is not important because not many people will want to use it. You say it based on what?

Shooting pirates on foot and shooting alien animals on foot is part of the same mechanics, so if the general thing is done, anything can be added to it with much less effort than creating the whole mechanic to begin with. So, it's not something that'll eat too much dev time. And shooting pirates is obviously not something about exploration, so it doesn't have anything to do here anyway and won't offer explorer anything of value - answering your "why would i shoot green elk instead of pirates" - because there are no pirates 234234324 light years away from sol.

Never said it's invalid. The way you said it indicated that you consider hunting on planets as not-fun activity that is not needed in game.

Yes that's exactly what I said, I thought the forums were about exchanging opinions on the game, along with asking/giving advice and other things. What's the problem?
I think it will be a terrible addition, and I've never seen a fun hunting simulator, even in GTAV it was terrible. Maybe they'll surprise me, but I doubt it.

Fair enough we've exchanged opinions - I apologise for indicating that the forums are not for that. My bad, wrong choice of words and bit of mutual misunderstanding.

Back on topic, I think we shall wait and see. Planetary hunt is not something we should worry and discuss/argue about at this stage of the game ;)

I said I can't imagine many people would like to see this. I never said I know this. I also never said your idea is not important. I said I think the game would be better improved elsewhere. Stop putting words in my mouth.
I'd be curious to see if I'm right. Maybe a poll or something.
Anyway, you stated your opinion on the subject and I stated mine. And then you told me I shouldn't be disagreeing with you.

No, i asked to tell me that this is already in the works. I never cared for the opinions other than the devs' ones. The answer that Braben himself talked about this is all the answer i need for now - it means that it might actually happen some day, and it's great.

As for the poll, well, you can always go and create one, then present the analysis of data and then we'd have some basis on calling this fun or not.
