Newcomer / Intro Exploration Question

Hey everyone, just a quick question in regards to exploring.
i have jumped to numerous binary or higher star systems, obviously when I jump in to the system I am close to one star, however when I do a detailed scan, even from the furthest planet away from the star I can not seem to locate any of the other stars.
Ive tried flying out further than the farthest planet by up to 100,000 Ls but still can't find any of the other stars.
Does anyone have any tips on how to find the other stars, is there any way to tell which way I should head away from the main star or is it just luck of the draw. I only have an intermediate scanner, do I need to upgrade to the advanced scanner.

Thanks all.

parallax is a good method where you head in a direction and watch for the stars moving. Any moving star is substantially closer and in the system. This can take a while...

The other way is an advanced discovery scanner.

I haven't tested since because I have been occupied with other stuff, but from what I remember from back then it used to work pretty well in the sense that it will point you in the direction of the far away star, and that is close enough to find it with a ping afterwards. Don't know if the galaxy map has changed since and if you can still see the individual stars when you select the system.

The easiest way to find the second star is to buy an advanced discovery scanner. And it's worth its price. I used to explore with an intermediate scanner, and it was reeeaally difficult! But when I got my advanced scanner, I got to explore tons of systems in no time. Make some credits with trading or bounty hunting and then buy it, you won't regret it.

I'm about 20 jumps from home on my first 700+ LY trip, I'm hoping that I'll have sufficient data to sell to get me an advanced scanner, but for my last few jumps home I'll try the other methods mentioned.

Not done any exploring yet myself but I think that when you target the star closest to you, the orbit lines appear. If you follow this line around there should be a distant star on this line. That will be your other star.

This works for binary systems but not sure about any others.

...or you could buy the advanced scanner!
