Exploration, scanning etc. Real world number crunching

How about something similar in Elite? We have system and planetary scans that basically do nothing much, we have the ability to find materials etc. How about tying some of these game mechanics in with some useful, real world number crunching as Eve Online apparently already does...?

Perhaps an idea for some CG's or 'locked' treasures found on planets, in space debris etc. that need to be decrypted/unlocked in some way via mini games using these real world computing projects as data sources?
 
I was just thinking this too! I mean the requirements of human eye analysis on scientific data spread out in a setting such as this are of such potential gains for humanity it seems borderline evil/criminal to not at least explore the potential. I remember the SETI program and lending computing power to the project what could we do in the Elite Dangerous vehicle to advance science?
