Exploration Sidewinder Help!

okay guys i feel this is gonna be a daft question, but after being out in the cobra for a day, i've hit the bubble done some trading and i now have enough for an advanced discovery scanner, and after reading through everyones comments i've started to feel abit sad to have sold the sidey without giving it much chance.

my plan is to get the sidey back but... is it worth the 1.5 mill to get the advanced discovery scanner. how much more will it help me, and how much more income will i get from having it( will it pay off?)

thanks

jay

do i keep the shields or have a afm instead

you don't loose any money, selling moduls. you don't need 1,5 mio CR in the bubble, when you are out to exploring, and an ADS is very common to get. so - in the beginning i bought a ADS when i went out, and sold it, when i needed it for something else. same goes for fuelscoops. just see that you have insurance. ADS is like some safe money in the bank. for the payout - hard to say... i never ran comparisons, because --- see above.

i would for sure go for shields. first of all - it is very complicated to land without damage, and the damage you'll take (hulldama) can't be repaired with AFMU. second of all - if you are interdicted on your way back, you are pretty much dead in a sidey without shields.

which brings me to one thing: return via a "safe harbour" - search a high security system at the edge of the bubble for return, with a station close to entry point. most dictatorships are high security ;-) --- returning over such system, and either sell your data there, or reoutfit your ship bubble-ready if you want to sell somewhere else.

your build looks okay, only fit d-class instead of e-class sensors (less weight). i personally would prefer an a-class frameshift-drive and an a-class fuelscoop above an advanced discovery scanner, and take an intermediate instead, if you can't finance it all.

maybe you want to fit a heatsink, in case you hit one of that very very rare binaries/trinaries, where you find yourself in the middle of all heat.

:D [up]

I would propose a slightly altered set-up

I would go with the 2A thrusters instead of the 2D. The reason to do this is mostly for bubble re-entry: with 2A thrusters you can run away faster when interdicted :).
I would also replace the 1D power distributor with the 1A. For almost the same reason: re-entry. With this distributor (if I have understood the machanics behind it correctly) your engines and your shields can receive more power, and so they will function / restore better (e.g. after a boost your engines become available sooner, and your shields regenerates faster, both are very welcome when being interdicted with millions worth of exploration data).
Finally you really should go for the 2A Frame Shift Drive, both for it being a better drive and for it having less weight, and thus increasing the maximum range of your ship.

with the altered set-up your max jump distance (with full tank) is 17.48 LY and with the Original set-up the max jump distance (with full tank) is 14.94 LY. With 17.48 LY jump range you can reach Beagle Point, with 14.94 LY ... erhm ... not.

Personally I would stick with the shields. The last 20 Kylie (Oh my, did I just really say that?!) all the damage I had was from landing. Having shields should prevent you from (some of) that. You don't need an AFMU to repair the SRV, so without one you should be good. Plan a short trip (Barnard's Loop?) to get used to the Sidey and to allow yourself to make the inevitable mistakes. Suffice to say that I ignored the same advice given to me .

this is the new setup guys
Funny to see how we tumble over each other to provide you with advice ;) And then two posts ninja'd by your eagerness to fly off in to the black! You will be alricht [cool]

Good luck and fly safe,
