I'm in a concept stage of building an exploration tool for myself and was wondering if there would be any community interest for the explorers in you?
Essentially, it'll just be a large repository of every single explored star in the galaxy including it's position (need to double check this last bit with the log files). The list will only get as big as each explorer adds to it. So if nobody adds to it, it won't grow. As you visit a star, the app will collect what information it can from the logs and store it in your local database; most of the other information will have to be entered by the user; objects, stations (if you dock at the station I'll be able to get its name and position), things like that so it's not something one would use when rushing exploration. It assumes you're taking your time. Or, other commanders could just use it as a reference tool (find only the systems with water worlds, for example).
Would there be any interest in such a thing? I personally love role playing the idea of an explorer, entering a new system, scanning it, entering that information in my survey tool and uploading to Exploration Command (hehe) which is then shared with hundreds of other explorers in the galaxy. I'll be getting updates of newly discovered systems within minutes of their discovery and be able to get the distance from them to my current position and maybe chart a different path... stuff like that.
I'm going to be exploring a bit first, writing down the information one is likely to record before I actually start with my technical specification and database design. I'll also have a look at incorporating something like eliteOCR to read the information panel in the system map for quick data entry. But, in the mean time, please let me know your thoughts? Interest? Anything you'd like to see added? Desire for alpha/beta testing? That kind of thing. Interest or not, I'm still going to write it,
I've attached a couple of screenies of the first GUI proof of concept; it still needs fleshing out, but it should give you some idea of what I intend.
In the attached screens you can see the main menu, shown on startup; and in the other, you can see I have added a child form; basically the idea behind this is to allow you to create exploration projects and mark them as completed and maybe share them (not sure why you'd share 'em but the idea is there).
