Exploration : The First Age of Pioneers (April 3300 - April 3302)

Its pretty sad to see some of those names written about in the pioneer timeline are long gone from Elite now. So many memories!

I still remember my last leg of DW1 , I was late because of real life issues(work :) ) . I landed and Erimus was there to greet me, just him and me, wonderful
BTW My ship was Purple Haze( the first)

Heh I remember it too. Good times. DW1 was probably my favorite time ever in Elite. :)

Looking at this old post, its nice to see it still being read, especially by newer players, but my days of chronicling the history of exploration are over. Hopefully one of the new players coming to the game will step in and write about the new chapter of exploration that's about to begin. 💫

The only way we will get another Age of Pioneers will be if we are able to traverse the great distances to the satellite dwarf galaxies, or even out to the Magellanic clouds. Perhaps some future technology will allow navigation of witch space not via honing in on dense gravitational wells from objects like stars, but by more diffuse gases in the halo or even dark matter. Perhaps we can someday explore the Monoceros Ring to get out to the Canis Major dwarf galaxy. It really depends on whether Frontier want to model other galaxies with new, parallel Stellar Forge seeds and allow us some means to get to them. Perhaps Guardian tech or Raxxla will allow this in future lore developments. Unfortunately most of the dwarf galaxies consist of immensely old, red stars. Not a lot of dynamism in such places allowing for new star formation. For that we need to get out to the Magellanic Clouds, or, even better, out to other spiral galaxies with a lot of churn such as Andromeda or Triangulum (speaking of which, I think the Milky Way core has too many young stars in Elite, but that is another matter).

That's what I'm keeping my fingers crossed for. There is a post here that is interesting as it mentions a link in the odyssey music files to a nearby dwarf galaxy. To me the music files indicate a piece has been written for a nearby globular cluster, something we can't see, but is in frontiers thinking to include it.

I do believe raxxla is a portal to some such place, and I get the naysayers saying its not in the game, but who knows what else came with the Odyssey update? No one knows yet!

After a long journey here I am.
Although this conquest is late, I am here, in one of the deepest points of the galaxy.
In the comfort of this fleet carrier, which is here thanks to those who came before me, the pioneers, who for years pioneered to the deepest parts of the abyss and beyond.

With this simple message and with this toast, I would like to thank you for your work and dedication to this community.

Thank you so much commanders it's an honor to share the galaxy with you!!!

A new galaxy would be cool. It would give another opportunity for the community to draw up maps and explore new bounds and such.

Tangentally related, there is a portion of the milky way galaxy completely unexplored, as it is separated from the rest of the galaxy. It's located in Xibalba. I picked a random system in there if you want to navigate the map cursor there: Pha Aip RX-U d2-0

Here's a very rough map:

@ORANGEORANGE : oh, that's quite interesting, and I never noticed that. Thanks for posting it!

Not even in a carrier?
Unfortunately, no. Looking at the galaxy map now, the populated sectors are separated by at least one empty sector anywhere: that's 1,280 ly then, far beyond fleet carrier jump range.

Update: a bit of clarification: you can generate the sector names of the galaxy, and then check the galaxy map against those. The search function can need a bit of massaging, but most of the time it can be reliable.
The closest crossing would appear to be the Pha Aec empty sector, which is diagonally between Hypau Aec and Ufosty. Even so, it would have to be diagonally across.

As you guys correctly figured out, it appears to be unreachable. I estimated the closest point to be somewhere around 2000 ly from the contiguous galaxy. The bounds of the galaxy have been thoroughly explored since 3300 and any transit points would have been discovered by now. One may argue that some catalog stars could exist that bridge the gap, but as it is so far away from the bubble there simply aren't any catalog stars here (I've brute force checked the HIP catalog, and reckon it's the same story for HD catalog).

Of course, that doesn't mean we will never get there, perhaps advances in technology in the future could provide a way to accomplish a single, very high-cost jump with a fleet carrier...or maybe wormholes...or something we havn't thought of yet! That said, don't get your hopes up too high, as a cursory look at the region shows it's probably very similar in composition to the edge of the galaxy (virtually all AFGK stars, with almost none of the other types present), which indicates its probably quite boring.
