[exploration] what triggers the discovery scanner reset?

I don't know if this is unique to me, but it's always been the case. When I enter a system and activate my discovery scanner, it will charge up...

Many times (often during velocity changes, such as when I'm accelerating away from a star) the discovery scanner progress bar resets and I have to start again.

Does anyone know what triggers the reset? I try to keep my acceleration at a minimum to try and get it to complete, but perhaps there's a better technique (ideally, not just stopping dead! :D)

It does seem to be network related. You can see a send spike, no receipt traffic, and another send spike after you re-scan, and then receipt traffic. You have to be looking for it though, it's not much data.
